Description

This is my first gaming build ever, after I have been using my laptop (i5, GT525m) for gaming/school but I wasn't able to play any game more than low settings. I am really pleased with it and what it can do. It can play any game I throw at it at max settings. I know you are going to tell me why not 7870, well because I got the 660 for $219 + Dirt 3 and $150 Nvidia free to play credit which I'm going to sell them for $70 >> video card total = $150 :D. The total was $920 with one $10 rebate (YAY no dealing with rebates) very nice price for what I got. The only problem I had when I was plugging the Cooler Master fans but the cable was too short (about 4 inches shorter than my other fans) and you know 4 inches is a big deal inside the case, so I had to change ALL my fans setting. Also, I noticed that the RAM was running at 1333 so I had to change that too.Other than the CM fans I recommend every part.

I successfully overclocked the cpu to 4.0 with good temps so far. Going to do some more overclocking in the future. All comments are welcome :)

I used to be a PC builder like you, then I took an arrow to the knee.

Looks clean. Good job. Upvote.

Recommendations 4 points 20 months ago

78fps with BF3? I would like to know more bench's with that gfx card please!

Smily 4 points 20 months ago

Hmm... 78 FPS doesn't seem very accurate for BF3 on ultra with that card. I mean, the 680 gets around 78 FPS on ultra. I wouldn't be surprised if it jumped up that high occasionally, but I bet on ultra it'll be around 50 FPS.

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 4 points 20 months ago

that's right 50 average but 70 when chilling and no fight

Smily 2 points 20 months ago

Which is great for a $220 card, considering all of the stuff you got with it!

Recommendations 2 points 20 months ago

It is a very good card for the money if you want to do stuff that involves CUDA or PhysX. 50 average is perfectly acceptable for me.

Sorry, was confused, I saw 78 in one of the pics and didnt see the last line.

Smily 2 points 20 months ago

Yeah, I can't really notice a difference from 50 to 60 when I play. I start to notice below 50 though

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 20 months ago

well I took this picture with my phone so I wasn't really playing and that's what I get while there's not much happening 70 fps. It's 50 while in action.

miniclipgamer [2 Builds] -1 points 20 months ago

Where the hell are you getting that number from?

Smily 1 point 20 months ago

His screenshots. One of them is Battlefield 3 and it has an FPS reading of 78 in the corner.

Bryson 2 points 20 months ago

Nice build! I can see you did your research before building! Im sure you will have lots of fun gaming experiances

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

almost 2 months of research

littlesamii99 2 points 19 months ago

Sorry, I'm new to building but how do you get the LED lights?

Divdor [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

Nicely Done. Good Choices and it looks great too. Game On!

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

Thank you

miniclipgamer [2 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

For me, personally, that is way to bright, but its not my build, so if you like it, thats good. Besides that, everything else looks good!

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

It's not that bright in real life, it's the camera make it like that.

miniclipgamer [2 Builds] 3 points 20 months ago

Oh good. I thought you took a chunk of the sun and put it in that cold cathode.

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 20 months ago

lol did you live in a cave recently?

miniclipgamer [2 Builds] 8 points 20 months ago

If you call my computer room one, then yes. :3

jakethemp [2 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

I love that vid card I have the same one, its silent fast and stays cool

Enlyten [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

This is one of the better looking builds I've seen. Amazing job.

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

appreciate it

cool7141 [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

Great Build! I have the same case and i love it, but it's small when you need to get a hand in there to fix something :/. Also i'm glad you went with E-Blue for your mouse. There are amazing but underrated!

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

This case runs so cool but yeah it's a little compact. I love this mouse over the Logitech G500 and it's so cheap!

Skelly123 [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

Dang that is a pretty nice build u got there that is very similar to the build im getting. Is the ssd worth it because i was thinking of getting the 660 ti instead of the ssd

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 20 months ago

get the 660ti, an ssd is if you want a fast boot. You can always upgrade to an ssd later on but the gpu is not easy to upgrade

Skelly123 [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

I dont think ill ever need a ssd since i dont really need fast boot time. But its just everyone telling me i need one cuz it helps with all my games but since its only going to help with the games i download on to it what about all my other games? I play more then one game like tf2, bl2, LoL, sc2, and many others. I dont think they will all fit in a 120 gb ssd.

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

Games will only benefit from an ssd whenever loading or loading screen. Not all games will fit on a 120gb ssd so you will have to make priorities on few games to put on an ssd, not all.

Skelly123 [1 Build] 2 points 20 months ago

Yup but i was tweaking my build what do u think about this http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Skelly123/saved/10qv

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

this will be an excellent build! seems very balanced too.

Skelly123 [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

Really? Well it was pretty good for the price but i was thinking about getting a better Case but i dont kno what u have to look into for a case but i just want a good case for under 80 bucks

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

If you want a better case I know these two are great Cooler Master Storm Scout and Corsair 300R .I've seen Corsair cases in my local store and they look so nice and durable! but I was looking for a windowed case.

Skelly123 [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

how good is that cooler master storm scout

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

I don't know exactly but people seem to like it. Now I just noticed that it doesn't have cable management holes. Depends on what features you want.

Ggadget 1 point 20 months ago

That's an okay build. However, the cpu you have selected is an i7. You should downgrade that to an i5 3570k, unless you don't want to overclock. Then you should get an i5 3570. Also, if you're not overclocking there's no reason to get the hyper 212 evo. Here is a good build : http://pcpartpicker.com/p/N8eR You can change the case if you want to.

Skelly123 [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

i do have the 3570k its always been there lol and yea i am planning to overclock it to 4.0 ghz. I think u looked at my build when i was messing around to see what the price would be with an i7

Ggadget 1 point 20 months ago

I looked at it again and now its really good.

xSWATxBadkid [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

At least your Christmas Tree is one color! Nice rig!

Fastmaster7 1 point 20 months ago

Do you play world of tanks?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

Fastmaster7 1 point 20 months ago

Damn you for getting that coupon (jokes)

ammw999 [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

How is the mouse does it lagg have any problems?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

Not at all. It's the best mouse ever

candy [2 Builds] 1 point 19 months ago

Out of curiosity what made you decide on the MSI GTX 660 over the other brands? For example the OC Gigabyte Windforce GTX 660 is cheaper.

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 19 months ago

at that time they were priced about the same + MSI has great cooling and it's so quiet

GB 1 point 19 months ago

true true and it is in fact the same speed but bigger by like a inch

njdevilsfan24 1 point 19 months ago

Love the GFX card, have the same one in my rig and runs everything pretty solidly.

TygerWarfare 1 point 19 months ago

i like the build for the budget! i was looking of the frontal view and i see the "26c" what degree is that showing and what kind of modification is that?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 19 months ago

the temperature sensor comes with the case

TygerWarfare 1 point 19 months ago

Okay thats very cool thanks!

mantawing [1 Build] 1 point 19 months ago

Great build and nice set up!

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 19 months ago

thanks

GB 1 point 19 months ago

tell me good sir what fps you get with skyrim with that video card. FUSRODAH!!!

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 19 months ago

Everything ultra, AA x8, and Anisotropic Filtering x16 I'm able to get stable 60 with v-synch on (tried to turn it off but didn't work)

GB 1 point 19 months ago

Do you use the 4k dlc and enb mods?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 19 months ago

right now, no

GB 0 points 19 months ago

bballdude024 1 point 18 months ago

This is great especially for the price. Good job! I plan on getting that power supply. How is it?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 18 months ago

Decent PSU, nice sleeving, and long cables. But it's not modular.

eliteseditionist 1 point 18 months ago

do you record?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 18 months ago

kinga 1 point 18 months ago

sounds veryy good also looking to build my first gaming pc seen as i relised my laptops rubbish and cant play anythig new. my question is how hard did you find it to build dont want to waste money im not bad with my hands as im a builder but dont have much of an idea how to build one? would i be better off just buying one built?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 18 months ago

Actually building one on your own is very satisfying because you get to pick the parts that are most important to your needs. It's not hard to build it. There are many videos that go through the process step by step. The pre-built options usually doesn't come with a graphics card and they put a low wattage psu which can't handle adding a graphics card.

kinga 1 point 18 months ago

thanks for response. yeah i suppose if you want something done right do it yourself. think ill get an xbox for now and do some more research just need to have one for total war rome 2 defo need a good graphics card for that;)

obl2013 1 point 18 months ago

you'd better have a liquid cpu cooler like H60. Also, 650W seem to be overkill. Why did you choose z77x-UD3H? How if z77 extreme3,4 or even 6?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 18 months ago

I don't need a liquid cooler, the temps are very good. 650W was only $69 without rebate. Motherboard was $114 after Microcenter combo discount and it's a quality motherboard.

CallawayIrons 1 point 18 months ago

You have very good cable management. Nice build.

bballdude024 1 point 18 months ago

Is that mouse decent for fps?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 18 months ago

It's a decent mouse generally.

Wiff 1 point 18 months ago

I have 2 questions. One, I have heard that the USB 3.0 connectors on this case do not work. Is this true? And two, do you like windows 8 and would you recommend it to people who are used to windows 7? What new features does it add? Thanks, and nice build. I am modeling mine off of this one. :)

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 18 months ago

No, the usb 3.0 do work. But the setup in this case doesn't allow you to plug the cables directly to the motherboard (unless you get an adapter). You'll have to run the cables to the back usb 3.0 plugs. Windows 8 is very good actually. I think of it as a Windows 7 with more improvements and features. I used a 3rd party app to add the start menu so there's no complaint.

Wiff 1 point 18 months ago

I think of it that way too, but I think that because the desktop and metro UI are two completely different things, I would almost never use the start screen and always the desktop. Do you find after having windows 8 for a while that you only use one, or both? And can you link the program you used to make the start menu come back?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 18 months ago

98% of the time I'm on the desktop. The rest of the time I use the Yahoo app and the calender which is offered through metro ui. The program is called Start Menu 8.

jbridgiee [1 Build] 1 point 18 months ago

Are you sure your memory is in the right slots? I have this mobo and remember it saying that the dual channel only works with a-b b-c rather than a-c b-d? I filled all of my slots so it's not an issue for me but just checking!

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 18 months ago

I checked the manual I have them in the right place. Thanks.

AkitAtikA7 1 point 18 months ago

This looks amazing! I can't wait to build my first system, at first glance this looks like you put a lot of $$$ into it but I was very impressed you kept it under 1000! Great job!

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 17 months ago

Thank you and good luck.

JPKaizer [1 Build] 1 point 17 months ago

your setup in the dark left me speechless...BADASS!!

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 17 months ago

MUAHAHAHA lol thanks :)

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 17 months ago

lol Da Ba Dee da da

Wolf_Spanky 1 point 17 months ago

I'm going to take a stab and say your favorite color is red...

Mistermickey [1 Build] 1 point 17 months ago

Nice build. Where did you find the 3570k for $189?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 17 months ago

Microcenter

austinwillard [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

anyway we could get a picture of the cable management on the backside? Also i've got the same case and SSD so i'm assuming you used the back mounting location for it like i had to. Great build!

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 16 months ago

I uploaded a photo from the back side. BTW, I didn't mount my ssd as you can see lol

austinwillard [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

haha thanks, yeah i see the ssd now down at the bottom.

alsweet 1 point 16 months ago

very nice overall, i'm currently working on a build which super similar to yours which is re-assuring as its my first time too http://pcpartpicker.com/user/alsweet/saved/1RHv

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

Thank you! Your build looks solid to me.

hkhan194 [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

is that a 24 or 27 inch monitor?

Smitherman78 [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

Great build but did you have to buy any extra wires for the case fans?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

Thanks! Because of the CM short wires, I had to rearrange all the fans over again. I didn't need any extra wires at the end.

Geogga 1 point 15 months ago

Where did you buy your GPU extension cables?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 15 months ago

These cables come with the power supply, mine comes with two of these cables (supports SLI)

sinevscosine 1 point 15 months ago

I have the same case as you. How did you mount the extra fan in the 5.25 drive bays?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 15 months ago

I added up 2 pictures showing how I mounted it. I used corner braces and I also had to cut them so they don't block the front panel mountings.

sinevscosine 1 point 15 months ago

Thanks I ended up doing something very similar!

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 15 months ago

looking forward to see your build!

Aalmassou 1 point 15 months ago

It's a very good build but if you ask me an ssd is a bit useless, now i have never used one but i just don't see the point, i would have dropped the ssd and got a 660TI. but that's just me, it's still a good build though.

wobblemaster 1 point 15 months ago

You lucky lucky son of a gun. You live next to a Microcenter, wish I did. Anyway this is an awesome build! I'm planning to build my first gaming build too. :P

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 15 months ago

I live near a Microcenter? ... I drove 2 1/2 hours just to get there. 5 hours of driving in total.

PlazmicFlame 1 point 14 months ago

Can this mobo allow one to have a 64-bit system? Also, does the SSD help with boot times?

Sorry, I am new to all of this...

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 14 months ago

The mobo have nothing to do with what system you put on (32 or 64) so yes.SSD help with boot times and super fast after boot program start ups.

Shanevslife 1 point 14 months ago

Hey man sick build. The case is really sexy too. Also A+ on the cable management. I might just have to use this part list.

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 14 months ago

Thank you! appreciate your feedback.

LookTopHats [2 Builds] 1 point 13 months ago

How are you finding that drive now that you have had it for a while?

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 13 months ago

HHD and SSD are both working A+

LookTopHats [2 Builds] 1 point 13 months ago

Okay great, thanks! :D

Duelix 1 point 12 months ago

Awesome build. Love the blue color scheme x)

FusedQuantonium 1 point 12 months ago

Lol we have a very similar build my friend. How is that case and gpu? +how do you open the case (latch, screw, thumb screw?). Last of all (sorry for so much questions i'm going to do my first build as well and have an i5 laptop), does the fan interface on the case good/helpful

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 12 months ago

The case is very good, you can't imagine how much dust the filter collects. I like that gpu so much because it's so silent and performs like a beast. I have been able to play all games on ultra except few like Planetside 2 (which is badly optimized). BF4 50 average on ultra!. Case opens from both sides with screws, top and front have latches. The fan interface is really good especially if you can mod it like mine, but I don't recommend these cheap a** fans. 3 of them already make noise and rattle sometimes. I will probably upgrade to Corsair silent/performance.

Variable.variables 1 point 1 month ago

This looks like a solid build! I personally would have gone with an AMD processor and a 280, but nice job! Which server in Planetside 2?

swag_69 1 point 11 months ago

How do you overclock your cpu, or your gpu? Sorry i'm a pc noob.

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 11 months ago

There's a program that comes with the motherboard and the gpu to overclock, or overclock from the bios.

asilaybuilding [1 Build] 1 point 11 months ago

hi just wanted that i recently completed my first build. and i often used your build as a reference for mine. even the fan in the optical drive, thought that was brilliant. anyway thanks for such a great build, it really helped me

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 11 months ago

Thank you, your build is pretty nice too.

iamdusk 1 point 9 months ago

Hey what are the dimensions of that desk? Where did you buy it?

EpicBro101 [1 Build] 1 point 6 months ago

Blue LEDs much?

Mr.Dexter 1 point 2 months ago

i am currently choosing items for my first build and am getting this case, but just wondering do you know the size of the front fan (the on behind the z kinda thing) as i want to change it to red as my room is based on colour red.

Javanode [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 2 months ago

120mm I believe.
