Today we're pleased to roll out significant updates to the site. In addition to a rework of the look and feel, we've also introduced a number of new features and performance improvements. While we're not done with all the updates we're working on, we did want to push live what we have to date.

Updates:

  • Site look and feel: First and foremost, you'll notice a massive change in the appearance of the site. This is the first fruit of bringing on board our design lead Phil Coffman.

  • Site performance: We massively improved the performance of part selection pages. You should notice a difference immediately. We made not just the backend server processing but also the page load and rendering times significantly.

  • Part sorting: Part categories are now default sorted by popularity. We aggregate a significant amount of usage data that we then use to determine this ordering. What you'll find is that the parts you most commonly want will be right at the top (or close). We've been doing this on the mobile version since its release last May and decided to roll it out to the desktop version as well.

  • Part price filter: You've been asking for this for a while, and we heard you! You can now filter parts, completed builds, and build guides by price.

  • Build guides: Up until now only staff could publish PCPartPicker build guides. We've opened it up now so that anyone can create and publish a guide. You can also view other guides, as well as vote and comment on them. Feel like you have the best idea for an Intel or AMD based build? Create your guide!

  • User avatars: On comments and user pages, you can now have your own avatar. Just go to your profile page and upload your own profile image.

  • Build tags: Initially just for build guides, we'll be rolling out tagging support for completed builds soon too.

  • Sortable saved builds: We've totally revamped how saved and completed builds are displayed in your profile. You can now easily sort saved builds, completed builds, and your build guides. We have a few more improvements slated for this area, so stay tuned!

  • Ability to reorder completed build images: Now you can reorder your completed build images however you would like. We'll pull the first three images in the set and use those for the thumbnails when viewing the list of completed builds.

We hope you like the changes, and of course, let us know if you run into any issues!

Ditto. This is quite a sudden change

KidLucario 3 points 25 months ago

No prior alert to this either.

But I ain't mad

Obnoxious 1 Build 2 points 25 months ago

Agreed! They should have notified us earlier, I thought I visited the wrong site or that PCPartPicker was hacked.

Oh suck it up, you will get used to it.

Rashiq -6 points 25 months ago

At lest they could have kept the single long page of hardware parts, which BTW IMO the single best feature of this site among others, as much as Phillip Carmichael has done for the PC community by establishing this wonderful site, Phil Coffman has ...... (I really hate to say it but...) ruined it by THIS interface.

In case some of you were wondering, Phillip did warn us about change but who knew it would be this BAD!! http://pcpartpicker.com/blog/52/welcome-aboard-phil-coffman

P.S Do not get the wrong idea, the work done on this site is top notch but that's about it. It was not designed for the purpose of pcpartpicker. My sincerest request to Phillip, at least allow us to choose the site we prefer to use. The old site was very functional and that was its beauty.

P.S.S (I gonna get my anger on now) WTF, WTH.....!!%$@ WHY CAN'T WE POST PICTURES ON COMMENTS LIKE DISQUS?? (Yo, don't integrate pcpartpicker with disqus, a lot of trolls there)

philip staff submitter 10 Builds 11 points 25 months ago

The abbreviated part category lists was my decision, not Phil's. I did it for site performance and page rendering reasons. Across the board, we were seeing 4+ second page load times, which is abhorrent and borderline unusable. The new approach provides a MUCH faster load on both the server side and the client side rendering time. We'll look at bumping up the count, maybe an infinite scroll method, but the whole part list loaded at once is no longer viable. As we continue to add parts (i.e. over 2000 different entries for RAM) it becomes even more less viable to do it all at once.

As for images on comments - we initially supported that, but removed it due to abuse by some users.

Rashiq 2 points 25 months ago

Thank you Philip for taking us into consideration. I like the infinity scroll idea. Since I live on slow internet I would rather wait 4 second (10 seconds for me) for the entire page to load rather than load 5 separate pages every 2 seconds.

candy 2 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

I actually really like this change, thank you for adding it. It really helps with overall website speed

Anthony21 2 Builds 1 point 25 months ago

Rashiq, I agree, i like that better than this new stuff. Its like its windows 8 all over again and it gave me quiet a headace and nvr goes away when i have to help my dad out that crappy system.

ttle54 -11 points 25 months ago

I love the new design though. This site looks like **** before the update. This is beautiful; it's really attract me

xx116xx 3 Builds 3 points 25 months ago

The site did not look good or bad before the update. I really wish they only changed how it looked. Some of the new page layouts are horrible.

ewhac 1 Build 11 points 25 months ago

Okay, so, I came back from a weekend at a Sci Fi convention, and find that someone's gone and messed with the style sheet. Naturally, my first reaction was within spitting distance of, "What the fsck?!?" But, who knows; maybe this new arrangement actually improves something. So I drove it around for a bit.

Here, then, are my thoughts after about fifteen minutes of mucking around at random:

  • The home page has a great big empty grey rectangle. Doesn't seem to impact site functionality, but also seems a waste of space.
  • "Waste of space" seems to be a recurring theme in the re-skin, which is weird when you consider the site's desire to be accessible on mobile devices (read: tiny screens). Examples: ++ The "quick links" bar at the very top of every page has gotten much taller, but the font sizes have not grown appreciably. ++ Indeed, for table-like information, each row now consumes much more vertical space without increasing font size. So the click targets are just as small, but less information is displayed. ++ An otherwise empty five-deep <DIV> is devoted to the text "System build" for the System Build page.
  • The parts lists are now multi-page. I can appreciate this was done to improve subjective site response time, but this was in fact a bad move.
  • The pages for individual parts devote an entire <DIV> to the star rating. That's just silly; you can put it in the same block with the photo.

I think part of the problem might be a possible misconception on the part of the site designer. This isn't a blog or news site with a comment section. This is a live, interactive database (with a comment section). As such, you must think not in terms of graphic design and layout, but in terms of tool design and work flow. And you must consider how your changes will impact a skilled user of the tools.

Suggested Improvements:

  • Increase font sizes or reduce row height.
  • For the parts lists: ++ Add page flippers at the top and bottom of each page. ++ Let the user set how many entries per page they want to see. ++ Add a link/button named, "Load All" which will load and display all entries in the current list. (Bonus points: Make it a sticky user preference.)

With some modest tweaking, and keeping in mind the tool-like nature of the site, I think this re-skin has a very good chance of turning out quite well.

Goldengoose 2 points 25 months ago

Was it just me, or did anyone else find it really difficult to start a new build?!

thebearo 8 points 25 months ago

Please please please please please let me go back to the way things used to be... this new one has actually taken away functionality.

LeMonarque 3 Builds 10 points 25 months ago

Honestly I think it's just an initial shock. All the item categories and sliders are exactly where and what they used to be, just in a new aesthetic feel. It looks a lot more professional in my opinion.

The saved parts list page has had a HUGE improvement and being able to rearrange the order of pictures in a completed build post is a great change in my case since I upload so many shots. Before if you wanted a specific picture order you would have to upload in that order. Later on if you wanted to put picture #5 in spot #2, you would have to delete pictures 2-40 and reupload them all over again in the right order.

I think there are some clarity issues though. In my opinion:

1) Some text is too small. For example, karma/comment counters on completed builds, user profiles. I think they could do with being both larger and not as narrow.

2) Some text is too large. The descriptions for completed builds and the OP entries in forum threads use absolutely MASSIVE fonts compared to everywhere else.

3) I think the forums link on the top right should be made into a button of its own on the top bar where the system build, build guides, etc. links are.

And I just have the general feeling that with such a modernized look, the Reddit-style comments system no longer seems to fit the style of the rest of the site.

mrdiko 8 points 25 months ago

New site is much harder to read on my Nexus 5. I like the old site better.

quadrplax 7 points 25 months ago

The main thing I don't like about the new design is the pages for viewing parts instead of it all being in one big long list.

raploh 7 points 25 months ago

Please change back to the old interface. The new interface is terrible. Functionality is lost. The previous interface is much simpler and easier to navigate.

candy 2 Builds -1 points 25 months ago

I think you are simply reluctant to change. Everything is the same about making parts lists asides from the conditions being on the left side and the multiple pages for components

raploh 2 points 25 months ago

Hmm... perhaps you're right. I might be reluctant to change. Alright, fair enough. I'll just get use to it. Seeing as there's nothing else I can do, other than getting use to it. -_-

Elvyn 7 points 25 months ago

This was very sudden. It looks VERY different..

Forloftol 6 points 25 months ago

It's brilliant. All I'm asking for, and a lot of other people are asking for, is the ability to choose which layout we use. Don't force change onto people; let them choose it! I, myself, would personally love to use the old design. I'm not a fan of sleek layouts and this certainly doesn't agree with me. (But, personal opinion aside, it is amazing!) That's the only feature I'm requesting. Please add it. You've got a mobile phone version, why not a basic version?

Rashiq 6 points 25 months ago

I fell like crying... I miss the old site... it was perfect. Why? WHY?

Tecck 5 points 25 months ago

Very nice! I literally saw the site was "down for maintenance", refreshed and saw this Glorious new design.

welshdiesel 1 Build 5 points 25 months ago

nice! you should include video build guides as well of the actual process!

welshdiesel 1 Build -1 points 25 months ago

Well i have been going threw the new site. All I have to say, if anyone starts another site using the old layout, ill be there.

Dubben 1 Build 5 points 25 months ago

It looks great and performance seems improved. One thing I would like to see is the sidebars on the right. I'm right handed like most people and it seems more intuitive.

GZUS96 3 Builds 5 points 25 months ago

The only thing I can think of to add is while looking for video cards. You should include an option to filter for the TYPE of ram i.e. DDR3 or DDR5 when searching for video cards.

Viroz 5 points 25 months ago

I think the update is very cool. Definitely looks nicer and more professional. However I feel a little functionality may have been lost, e.g. I can't seem to find where you delete/rename a saved part list any longer..

philcoffman staff 2 points 25 months ago

We're working on a better solution for this because it's not obvious, but currently you can delete/rename a saved part list by going to the Saved Part Lists section and click on the "Edit Description" button at the top right of the Saved Part List details on the right. On the next page there's a delete button at the bottom and if you click "Edit" next to the Description or General areas you will go to an area where you can change the title.

Bidalos 4 points 25 months ago

And I was just browsing the site... few minutes ago bam maintenance. I came back and wow great looking website! 10/10 would come back more often! Good job.

ejd200 4 points 25 months ago

There is less screen real estate now. I think the old format was easier to read. Everything feels shunted to the right.

maddudy 3 points 25 months ago

see that blank space on the side???? well fill it in and it would be better then the old one.

Hakumisoso 2 Builds 3 points 25 months ago

I really like the look , but I like the row layout vs this column layout.

joelhowell 3 points 25 months ago

Although it looks sleek. It is very confusing to operate.

chezit24 3 points 25 months ago

Thought I had the wrong web address and was being advertised some scammy stuff :P

Mercider 3 points 25 months ago

While the new style is not bad, I think the old style looked better. What you should do is add an option to view the site in both styles. It's good that there has been a performance increace though so that's nice.

ChaoticShadow 3 points 25 months ago

Despite being a glorious new facelift to fit with the new spacious fad/trend, whatever, it'd be pretty cool to have options: Old design, old design, both including all the new features. :P

zerabp 0 points 25 months ago

Please this.

Ab313r 3 points 25 months ago

I saw the new site and I was like this isn't part picker why did you do to the real one!? I kind of like the new look but I wish you had just re-skinned the old one and updated it instead of completely changing it.

James296 3 points 25 months ago

with this update, you can count me as one less user. good bye

zerabp 1 point 25 months ago

I don't like the change but this seems a bit harsh.

Fsylar 3 points 25 months ago

Pls phil: After 5 hrs am used to it but stil no X button to remove when using mobile view on phones (sony z1 compact and operamini user)

Thefire259 3 points 25 months ago

Wow seems like we went two steps back, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

imloppie 1 Build 3 points 25 months ago

The newly designed site looks good but makes it difficult to view all the information in detail.

You should at least give the user the option to view the website as it was before.

Jamboozlez 3 points 25 months ago

I don't see anything wrong with this new site - it looks amazing! Great job PCPartPicket Team!

Sonyz92 1 Build 3 points 25 months ago

I really like the look/feel of the new site and the animations are nice.

The build lists were so much easier to read before! I see the little dividers (barely) but the information is still kinda just floating there. I liked the table styled list better.

When I click on "Show more..." in the filters, I get a 500 mile long list of EVERYTHING in that category. This only applies to the filters on the completed builds page though. Perhaps breaking them up into each brand would help.

ShadowKnightNinja313 3 points 25 months ago

Goodbye pcpartpicker, I honestly can't stand it. You served me well for my 9 months here.

Jk

Im just not used to the site, it feels wronggg

rishi23 1 Build 3 points 25 months ago

I think the old interface was better

DanniieBoiiy 3 points 25 months ago

It's not a good change. It used to be better than their mobile version and now I find both difficult to use. I can even select my saved parts list thanks to the ability to swap their positions. It's quite irritating.

Riker357 2 points 25 months ago

holy crap this is different! i opened the site and i had no idea it was changing XD

thebearo 2 points 25 months ago

Please please please please please let me go back to the way things used to be... this new one has actually taken away functionality.

noversis 11 points 25 months ago

I agree that the older layout was way more clear and easy to use. Also less screen real estate was wasted with what now is lots of empty space. The old view was more condensed and it was easier to get all the needed information on one glimpse without any scrolling. Especially on smaller screens this is now a real hassle and very annoying.

Sussurus 11 points 25 months ago

I have to agree with this. In the old layout everything was much clearer and it definitely made use of real estate well. This one feels more barren and makes it more difficult to get the information about components as nothing really stands out on the page except the name of the component and its rating. Plus, the new site has much slower loading, I think.

joelhowell 3 points 25 months ago

I totally agree with these people above. This is just to different too soon.

I don't agree, but who am I to challenge the likes of you guys...

TeamBlast 2 points 25 months ago

Love it, although it's really difficult to use on my netbook that has a 1024x600 screen. Screens with a higher res do it justice though.

WDParsell 1 Build 0 points 25 months ago

There is a mobile mode, maybe that will improve the site on low res screens.

TeamBlast 2 points 25 months ago

Good point.

Fsylar 2 points 25 months ago

I like change but where is the remove button in the part list... Big miss. Philip fix this

philip staff submitter 10 Builds 6 points 25 months ago

The remove button is still there, but now it's an "X" on the right hand side.

UneditedSkunk 2 points 25 months ago

Did my usual rounds around the site this morning, looking at all the new builds and checking for any new sweet price drops. (You guys have saved me some serious coin!) Logged back on this afternoon and Whoa Dave! what a massive change! Phil, you’ve really done an incredible job with making everything feel fresh and new so I tip my hat to you! The only thing I’m not a fan of is the page count you incorporated into the parts search. I’ve always enjoyed having everything from A-Z displayed on screen at once. I understand that this is partially what makes the site so much faster but I’ve spent so much time clicking to the next page that it’s actually been taking me more time to get somewhere and see all my options. I would humbly request adding a setting to possibly turn this feature off and on (Or permanently on). It would make life much less tedious. Many Thanks P.S. Site looks great!

vtskiman 2 points 25 months ago

Nice but not as detailed as previous. Previously when searching components, you could see your current list of added items on the right side top. Now it's gone. Also, toooo much open empty space. Previous was easier to view and sort - it also showed vendor next to price. Now another click is needed to see who vendor is. C+ Grade.

Give us a choice which one we can use., and you'll see the majority prefer the previous.

vtskiman 2 points 25 months ago

Looked at it again and thank God I used it on Friday and purchased what I needed to build. I attempted to do the same [another build] and wow - TOTALLY CONFUSING. Can't recommend any more as they'd think I lost it.

Lettershort 2 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

How are we supposed to rename saved parts lists now?

Blippple 2 points 25 months ago

How can I see ALL the parts available in a category ?!?! I dont want to have to click through 25 + pages just to find the right part !

neo_mouse 2 points 25 months ago

Is there a way to delete saved build list? Am I just not seeing it? Looks great by the way!

Edit: ok I am blind I found it.

tjb4077 1 Build 2 points 25 months ago

Fsylar 2 points 25 months ago

Tooth good point about pcpartpicker having a build of the month points awarded by the quality of pictures ,good describtion on function of pc and why he/she choose each part etc...

obsideo 7 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

Flipping the category column to left side threw me off right away, but it took me all of twenty seconds to get used to it. I do, however, immediately miss the collapsible categories.

The ability to arrange photos of completed builds is very nice. As is the previews in saved parts lists.

The mobile site seems quite a bit more sluggish, especially with part filter overlay open. Also, there still seems no way to add parametrics on mobile (I could be just missing it?).

I think a great site improvement i could see would be an option to submit custom parts for review to potentially add a new category. The biggest example that stands out to me would be video cables (almost no parts linked here come with this very necessary item), but could potentially include drive adapter brackets, fan filters, case lighting, custom loop liquid cooling components, multi-monitor mounts... and stretching here, desks/chairs. Maybe even a miscellaneous catch-all category?

Overall, i appreciate the continued work. Change, for good or bad, is still an effort to improve and not abandonment.

GZUS96 3 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

Also, give us the ability to filter out mail in rebates. I do use them but there are times I would just like to filter out the mail in rebates. Not to where the product will not show up, but to where it sorts the products according to what you will pay.

For instance, if I were to search for power supplies. I then get a list of them, and then I click for them to be listed from lowest to highest price. Many time I end up getting several items that populate the top of the list, and are listed as having very low prices. However, I click on them only to find out that most of the reason the price is low is because of a rebate.

I still want these items to show up in my list, but show up in the order according the the actual up front cost.

philip staff submitter 10 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

We do include that option - when browsing any part category, in the price filters (left hand column) you'll see a checkbox for "Include mail-in rebates". It's checked by default, but if you uncheck it it will recalculate prices without mail-in rebates factored in.

GZUS96 3 Builds 1 point 25 months ago

AWESOME, I never noticed that. Thanks. DEE DEE DEE :-)

GZUS96 3 Builds 1 point 25 months ago

Now what about my suggestion for when looking for video cards. An option to filter for the type of RAM in video cards, i.e. DDR3 or DDR5?

bobtherock 3 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

Nice look. I like the completed build look on the left of the homepage.

ONE problem (its the only one i see) is that my work computers don't display the page correctly. The component selector (which I think is meant to be a drop down) is perminently blocking the first third of every page. The first line I can read on this page is 'improvements'.

Otherwise +1

philip staff submitter 10 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

What browser and browser version are you running? (Also what resolution are you running?) We'll see if we can reproduce it here and fix it.

bobtherock 3 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

IE 9 ver. 9.0.8112.16421. 1680x1050 It looks like all the drop downs from the headers are open. Search and category selection overlap each other. Its likely to be a script/java thing because this browser has been modified by my employer.

EDIT: Also I can't use the picture gallery to switch between photos. I have to be on the build overview and select the individual photos each time.

bobtherock 3 Builds 1 point 25 months ago

All sorted now. Cheers guys.

Rufious 2 points 25 months ago

Jamboozlez 2 points 25 months ago

Found a few small problems:

[-] The upvote and downvote buttons on comments are too small and unclear! I was unsure what they were at first.

[-] When selecting a CPU, if I select 'AMD', it still lets me choose 'Intel i5' for example.

robb_0909 1 Build 2 points 25 months ago

I can't see some stuff at the top of the screen, what is up with that. I can't even use this site now.

I can't even read the first few lines of there own blog post. What the crap.

OldBoy 2 points 25 months ago

Please allow some of us to go back to the old interface. I honestly liked it a whole lot better, and I see that's the case with other people too. Different is not allways better, and that applyes also when things change too much all of a sudden.

Scrounger 4 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

The site is no longer unusable for me. If I want to build a system, I can no longer pick a CPU or CPU cooler. When sorting, I can no longer pick the first few items, because the grey bar takes up 80% of the page, and things are hiding behind it. I have to try to post a comment just to log in bacause the log in tab is gone.

Part of the problem is that I'm stuck with IE 8.0 and cannot change, but the purpose of a web site is to convey information to as many as possible.

If you limit your information to an audience that already has the latest hardware and software, you've eliminated the people who really need PcPartPicker.

Scrounger 4 Builds 1 point 24 months ago

I'm finally able to use the site (on a different computer). I like the way it looks, and more importantly, how much faster it is. I'll have to limit my visiting to borrowed computers, but I now see what everyone is raving about. Its much nicer, if only on someone else's computer.

vincemark 2 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

From a design standpoint, its beautiful. My major complain is the transition animations. They make browsing a bit slower. At first sight its fancy, but when you browse multiple builds, it just seems like it slows the experience. Also the parts list no longer seems to be the main focus now that it is on the side.

Side note, not very mobile compatible. I hope changes are afoot.

MaddenShadow 2 points 25 months ago

I might have completely missed it, but I don't think that there's a way to delete builds now.

Although, we can sort them much more easily now, so it's not as much of a problem ;)

Ah, that might seem a bit hidden at the moment (we changed some wording at the last minute). To delete a saved build, click the "Edit the Description" button. There's a delete option near the bottom of that page.

joedetode 1 point 25 months ago

Loads of price data has gone missing for me like 3/4 of the product don't have any price on them so I can't choose them in my build I'm sure its probably a bug or my specific part compatibility so yeah...

joedetode 1 point 25 months ago

I love the new look and design though it works really well on my tablet :)

Crappygamer 1 Build 1 point 25 months ago

That's happened for me too, probably just a bug :)

NZpirate 1 point 25 months ago

I am having the same issue, really not helpful when trying price up builds for projects.

backoffmanImascientist 1 point 25 months ago

Here's what I'm seeing in firefox,

the text is from near the top of this page we are on here, everything above "Site performance: We massively improved the performance of part selection pages. You should notice a difference immediately. We made not just the backend server processing but also the page load and rendering times significantly." is blocked out by the bluish section where CPU, Cooler etc picto-icons are:

backoffmanImascientist 1 point 25 months ago

Someone just sent me a message, as I can see the notifier, but when I open it, the blue field hides it so SORRY I CAN'T READ IT.

Lol.

Holy jeez, was gone the whole weekend, come back and this. I nearly thought I tipped the wrong adress (the new feel reminds me a lot of Habbo, anyone else?).

The new features are neat too :) +1

plgdg 1 Build 1 point 25 months ago

In contrast to many of the other comments in this post, I actually love the new design. As a designer/developer myself, I can really appreciate the changes and the new look/feel. I, for one, think the new update to the site is wonderful. The people who are complaining are obviously afraid of change. Change is good. Designs become stale over time and just don't work well anymore with the ever-changing face of the Internet. Given some time, people will get used to this new design and come to embrace it. (As they should!) It is a glorious and wonderful step in the right direction for PCPartPicker. Keep up the good work fellas. #highfive

EDIT: Also, DO NOT allow an alternate version of the "old" site to be used. Otherwise, your efforts in updating the site are all for naught and a waste of time. Force people to learn the new design so they can eventually embrace it.

Lightz 1 point 25 months ago

My favorite parts used to be first when looking at a component list (CPU list for example, my favorite CPUs used to be the first ones), but now I need to look for them 1 by 1. What?

KidLucario 1 point 25 months ago

Only one glaring thing now - I can't figure out how to change the title of a part list. HELP

WDParsell 1 Build 1 point 25 months ago

People are freaking out because what they are used to is gone, that is very understandable. Take some time to get used to it, I already have.

The site looks great, I would like to give all of the kudos to the devs behind this update.

RetroJam98 1 point 25 months ago

Absolutely not. Change it back, or at least let those who liked the old one switch back.

EmilyTheChef 1 point 25 months ago

I think it looks nice, but I usually access on a desktop.

They're not going back, people - so stop whining and enjoy the neural plasticity boost you're getting by having to "learn" something new! They said they're not done - so there will be more to come!

Where are the CPU Benchmarks?

why cant i delete saved builds?

philcoffman staff 1 point 25 months ago

We have an update coming soon that will make deleting saved builds a lot more obvious. Currently if you go to your "Saved Part Lists" page there's an "Edit Description" button next to the title of each list. That will take you to a page with a delete button at the bottom.

Sonyz92 1 Build 1 point 25 months ago

Every time I go to the next page when looking at completed builds, It stays at the bottom and I have to scroll back to the top .

vtskiman 1 point 25 months ago

when looking at Parts [Storage] - on the upper right is a option "Add From Filter." When you click on it, it adds a Foam Filter. Huh? Thought it would allow me to add specific Sellers [Amazon, NewEgg, Adorama, etc] WRONG. It adds a foam filter :-(

kylclrk 1 Build 1 point 25 months ago

What do you mean by foam filter?

vtskiman 1 point 25 months ago

When selecting items in the PARTS section, on the right side it shows an option to add a "From" filter. When you click on it - it simply adds a Foam Filter to your parts list. Isn't it supposed to allow you to Sort by Suppliers[From NewEgg, Amazon, etc.]

Diablalex 1 point 25 months ago

I can't find the benchmark for graphic cards and cpu ? did you remove it or i am dumb and can't find it?

BoyScout staff 7 Builds 1 point 25 months ago

The benchmark data we had up previously was removed (unrelated to the site update) as it was getting a bit out of date. We are working on a more comprehensive set of benchmarking information to replace it in the near future.

Diablalex 1 point 25 months ago

Oh cool. Thanks! the new website is neat btw

UTL 1 Build 1 point 25 months ago

Yay! This is a good change. It looks much more modern and slick, and I love the faster load times.

It will definitely take getting used to, and some of the placement seems strange, but I'll trust Phil on this one rather than my own habits.

I've never seen a website release a major change without many initial user complaints, but the complaints stop eventually as people realize that for the most part it is much better. So call me a hippie, but I support progress. Keep up the good work!

Anthony21 2 Builds 1 point 25 months ago

How am I soposed to update a completed build with a replacing part? keeps going to one of my other builds that i have saved for later. This upgrade still abit confuses me on where to go compare to the basic one just shows everything there.

This place was basic as using windows xp from windows 8.

We need an option to have a basic layout and a upgrade layout.

evogeek 1 point 25 months ago

Bummer, i loved the classic look, it was much easier to look at huge globs of parts at a time. as much as i love this site, i may need to find a new alternative. i am always into the latest and greatest and look and feel, but i use this site for my work and i need to find parts in a hurry. now it will look pretty but take much longer to find parts. super huge bummer. I told so many people about this site too. im just not loving it. ill deal with it but definitly will be keeping an eye out for something else now. Dont turn into just another BestBuy site. you guys did what you did best and stood out from the crowd. no its just another pretty shopping price finding site. so so sad. love change, just not this one.

Maybe make it so that when choosing values such as price or amount of memory, you have the option to type in values instead of having to struggle moving the slider to the perfect position that you want it to be at

lohjiahung 1 point 25 months ago

I feel that there should be an option for switching between the old design and the new one, so that people who have gotten accustomed to the old version can switch back from the new one. Good work anyways, liking the new design very much.

danhoo 2 Builds 1 point 25 months ago

The new layout needs a lot of adjusting. Overall way too much wasted space. the top headers are too tall and waste a lot of useful space.

The "content" pages also need help. For example: On the saved build page, there is a massive amount of wasted space in the left nav, and the useful information is now squeezed into a narrow panel on the right.

On a part detail page (for example) http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-gaz97xud5hbk

The giant blue title (with the redundant "MOTHERBOARD" heading and "Motherboard" in the title of the part and the five stars takes a HUGE amount of vertical real estate, and when you scroll past it the useful tech information is squeezed into the left nav, and the "where to buy is given the most space on the page. In this case there are 8 Merchants, but when there are only 2 -3 Merchants it looks really silly.

adriant42 1 point 25 months ago

Love the change. The new site looks contemporary to me. Best feature for me: Part categories are now default sorted by popularity. This saves a lot of my time. Maybe this was available on the old site, but I realized it just now. Good job, guys!

ryanshadow100 1 Build 1 point 25 months ago

i like the new design with one issue i missed it where in your saved part list each part list showed a graph of the prices going up and down for all the parts if you bring that back it will be good.

witwerg 1 point 25 months ago

Honestly the Left menu when viewing parts list uses way more space than I care for, and causes the main content of the page not to fit on screen when viewed in portrait mode (side ways monitor) without horizontal scrolling. At the very least I'd make it collapse able but would probably prefer a thin bar(s) across the top/bottom

No_Nrg 1 Build 1 point 25 months ago

Love the new look! The big enhancement is now the photo's actually look good now. Your prior way of displaying photo's was fuzzy and didn't look good at all for some builds. Good job on showing off pictures, clear and they look now like the originals!! Philip, don't worry about the negative comments, some people don't like change or too lazy to go with the changes. I can tell you this is a good move on your part.

edit: just thought of something, how about your staff select the "build of the month" and post it on the front page. You would decide what rules and qualification would be needed. Would give some hard workers a chance to show of their work. Just a thought.

I think it looks much more modern. It's going to take a little getting used to, but it should be better going forward.

I would still have a checkbox to "Don't display parts data with no pricing info" option you used to have. Anything you can do to cut down on the number of SQL records returned will improve performance. Where conditions are key, and there are likely more parts in your DB without pricing info than with!

In addition to my earlier post, I'm still loving the site. However, I've noticed a couple slight problems during general usage of the site. The comment +1 and -1 buttons are just little squares with X's in them (no differentiation). Also, favorite parts are no longer bumped to the top of part selection lists (this is a tad inconvenient). Lastly, I know where the "delete saved part list" button is, but it's just in a very hidden, inconvenient place.

The rest of the site is excellent so far, though :)

I was hoping they would put part images when browsing on all devices, can only see this in a non-detailed list or on the phone version. Helps a lot when looking for a case especially.

philcoffman staff 1 point 25 months ago

I agree part images help, especially when browsing for cases. It's hard to come up with a way to show part images on the detailed list view and still keep that view tight so you're able to show a lot of parts at once. That's why we have the list view, which now features larger thumbnails. These views are critical to the site so we're continuing to refine them to be the best they can be.

onlinefreak 1 Build 0 points 25 months ago

After using the site for a couple days now for extended periods I can finally say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the new-and-improved website. This is far beyond the fit-and-finish of the former site and functionality is better overall. Those who complain that "insert feature" has been removed need to just stop and look around for a second to see that, whatever it is, it's still there, and better than it used to be. The layout just takes getting used to and that's it. Those who are complaining simply cannot acclimate to change (mind you, that's not a positive trait to have), and are just plain wrong in saying that the old version was better. Take some time and get used to this version before jumping into the comments and complaining.
