Description

I bought an ASUS PG278Q on sale back in March. It was here that I got my first taste of 1440p gaming. I always heard people ranting about how great the resolution is above 1080p.

They were right. No ragrets. Not even one letter.

My 970s held up very well all things considered. I could run most of my games with high settings and some things turned to medium and achieve at least 40-55fps. Damn did my top card get hot though.

With the announcement of the new cards, I knew I was going to upgrade. I was convinced I was going to get a 1080 for the longest time, but changed my mind last week when I realized I would probably end up getting a 1080ti or Titan P. So I decided to get a 1070 and wait it out.

I'm pleasantly surprised with the performance of this card. It surpasses both of my 970s combined. I can run Witcher 3 with everything maxed out and hair works off at 60+ FPS in 1440p. Overwatch runs well above 60fps max settings as well.

I wasn't able to overclock much, but these were my results:

Heaven Benchmark - 1440p everything maxed Score - 1470 FPS - 58.3

Rise of the Tomb Raider Benchmark - 1440p maxed settings Overall FPS - 75.11

Firestrike v1.1 Score - 15220

I'm also happy to say that in less than two weeks I will be able to get rid of my wifi card, as I will be moving and the router is located in my bedroom. So much happy.

Update 3.0 will be a complete overhaul of my system in preparation for returning to school. Stay tuned!

Part Reviews

Video Card

Coming from two 970's in SLI, this card is a treat. It runs better than both of those cards combined and I'm very satisfied with my improved 1440p performance. This is a placeholder however until the 1080ti or Titan P are released. Since this model is factory overclocked, I wasn't able to get much further of an overclock out of it. I wasn't able to get a stable overlock at the coveted 2100mhz, but I'm right on the cusp at 2088!

Plays Witcher 3 completely maxed out with hair works off at 60fps+.

Keep in mind this card is huge because of the three fan cooler. Make sure you check case compatibility.

The Aura lighting is a lot of fun! I had issues downloading it from the included disc however. I attempted to download it twice from their website before being successful.

The fans have yet to kick in that are plugged into my card. It honestly doesn't need the additional cooling. In SLI it would be more useful with the added heat.

This is easily one of the most aesthetically pleasing cards available right now. It manages to look good without being too gaudy and it will fit in with any build theme due to the simplistic grey/black and RGB lighting.

Monitor

I was fortunate enough to get this on sale and receive a unit that had no defections.

My reaction upon first playing Rise of the Tomb Raider in 1440p was nothing short of awe. Games truly look fantastic on this monitor.

Zero regrets on upgrading from 1080p.

Msi gaming x or this one ?

  • 1 point

gaming x all the way. the measurements for acoustics show it's far quieter and far cooler with those two big fans rather than the three tiny ones on asus and other mfg. overclocks for the aibs are very similar across all brands.

The fans don't come on until you hit 60C and even then I can't hear them over my other fans.

This card is much bigger than the MSI variant, so be sure to check it can even fit in your case.

I'm not saying it was a massive 40 frame leap, but at the same time I can max out more, if not all settings and achieve higher frames simultaneously.

Like I mentioned in my post, I could play Witcher 3 medium/high and get around 40-55 FPS with 970 SLI.

Now I can max everything to Ultra with just hair works off and get 60+.

And now I don't have to worry about SLI drawbacks.

Awesome upgrade and Kudos on now have a TRIFECTA of ASUS components ( Motherboard, Monitor, and Graphics Card ). Thanks for being #TEAMASUS & #TEAMROG. Although technically you are seriously stacking the hardware as it looks like you also have a PCE-AC68

Best of luck with the build running smoothly and reliably! it is a solid looking build. If you have a TWITTER let me know and I will give you a shoutout!

Nice build. Its not really a major upgrade, but I understand why you wanted to leave the 970 sli setup. How is that monitor? I was considering picking one up sometime.

I love it. I wasn't interested in leaving 1080p because I thought 1440p and 4K were just hype, but I was wrong.

Games really look fantastic at this resolution. Sometimes I stop to admire the environments of my games.

Worth every penny.

Now that the new Titan is announced, any thoughts on 1080 vs 1070 or worth the wait for a Ti?

  • 1 point

There's debate on whether the Ti will be a thing this go around. If it is though, it wouldn't be released for quite some time after the Titan.

  • 1 point

Agreed, and now looking at Titan prices there is no way I would want to spend that kind of money. Not that it isn't gonna be worth it, its overkill for my system. I ended up buying a 1070 and will run that in SLI unless 1080 Ti is something we hear about in the next 6 months.

I wanted to avoid SLI again, but I might end up with two 1080s.

if you wanted a gtx 1070 i would've gotten a 60hz 1440p monitor, but you can upgrade to a gtx 1080 later as well to make the most out of that monitor

  • 1 point

I have been using a 144hz 1440p monitor. My next upgrade would be a 4K monitor following the release of the 1080ti.

Guess it's a bit of an eventuality to stumble upon a PCPP build from someone who has your same desk, same mouse, keyboard, and mousemat, same speaker system, Xbox controller sitting in the exact same spot, and even the exact same idea for repurposing some of the desk bits to keep the tower off the carpet.

I feel obligated to at least leave my +1.
