Build

Mid-range Ryzen PC for School

I'm starting the Junior year of my Comp Sci degree come in Spring and was looking to build a new linux workstation for software development, virtualization, and containerization. My biggest constraint is the lack of free space in my office, so I started with an ITX build. Went with an AMD GPU since the AMDGPU linux drivers seem to be working really well at the moment. I don't intend to use the system extensively for gaming, so I took the money I could have spent on a better GPU and instead upgraded from 16 to 32 GB of ram.

If a 1TB SSD is considered a mid range PC, I built my computer wrong. :P

Awesome build though, man. So much power in such a small form factor. I love it.

That case is cool looking. Also looks like a pill to work in. Good job.

Thumbs up.

If my wife sees the post, it is absolutely 100% for school and no gaming at all.

Really cool looking case. Disk drive bays are a thing of the past, less cases should leave space for them.

fallenpixel submitter 1 Build 1 point 6 months ago

I love the case. I wouldn't recommend it for someone's first build, like I did. It's hard to work in, but it looks great. It doesn't run as cool as id like, and thre is no more room for fans.

That's quite a powerful little box! The only thing "mid-range" about it is the GPU, and maybe the size. Nice.

I see u with that steam controller lol

I like this build. Vertically standing like a tower, showing it's power... reminds me of Tower of Sauron, i don't know why! XD

+1

Did you hijack my Newegg wish list??

Great build. What distro are you going to throw on it?

fallenpixel submitter 1 Build 1 point 6 months ago

Been planning this for about 4 months, so no. Distro? Probably arch, for now. Maybe Fedora come next semester.

Have you tested Steam Play/Proton on the RX 580 yet?

fallenpixel submitter 1 Build 1 point 6 months ago

Not extensively. Subnautica seems to launch and have decent performance, which is about as far as I've gotten.

Don't use the Experimental branch right now as that's experimenting with asset compression which is causing all kinds of havok on OpenGL systems.

These little cases make my head hurt. You did an amazing job keeping it clean. Great work.

Nice build! I used the same case in one of my own builds a while back - just wondering: what temps do you get? +1

How are the thermals?

What was the reason behind such a tiny case? for the money you were putting into the Pc, wouldnt it be ideal to at least get a mid tower? Allowing space for upgrades and stuff like that?

Thenizzz 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

I just bought this case as well man planning a build for it how many fans could u get in it?

Was thinking the CPU isn't threadripper and the GPU isn't anything to write home about.
