Description

This was my first experience building a PC and I was replacing a 5 year old Gateway desktop that I bought at Best Buy. Needless to say, this was a major upgrade for me. I started with the idea of making something pretty budget friendly and began buying pieces around Thanksgiving 2016. I figured I would take my time and buy things as they went on sale. Towards the end I started getting anxious though. I still think I got almost everything at a good price though. Glad I waited on the CPU and motherboard as I got a Kaby Lake and Z270 setup. All the Z270 motherboards are pretty slick looking. Wish I hadnt already locked myself in the boring old black and red theme as the Z270 motherboards would have made it easier to do a different color scheme.

Im new to this so I havent played around with overclocking or done any benchmarking yet. I do expect to OC the CPU soon though. If I have any additional thought or issues Ill update this post though.

Part Reviews

Wireless Network Adapter

Very fast. Cant compare this to other higher quality cards but I will just say on the desktop I replaced (Gateway I bought from Best Buy 5 years ago) I was getting about 30Mbps down. With this card I am getting over 230Mbps down. My computer is on the opposite side of a single family house from the router. The old desktop could not even see the 5G network. This card is getting full signal on the 5G network.

Case Fan

Looks good, I like the lighting, not too noisy.

Nice build, nice colors.

Trash_lord 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

Nice build dude, how's it been so far upgrading from that gateway?

Lager11B submitter 3 Builds 2 points 20 months ago

Like night and day. I have the old computer in the basement. Still need to transfer some pictures and such off the HHD. I swear the thing wasnt so slow a few weeks ago when I was using it every day, but firing it up now is a painful experience. Guess its just because I know what fast is now.

+1 wow looks amazing! How are you liking it?

BossRSA 1 point 20 months ago

What's your thoughts on the PNY XLR8? I haven't seen the lineup being used that often. Otherwise, solid build! +1

Lager11B submitter 3 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

Right now I am playing Path of Exile and Mechwarrior Online. Probably not the most graphically intense games out there but I have the settings turned up and its running smooth. I mainly bought this card for the price, $370 seemed pretty good for an OC'ed 1070. The red/black fit my build as well. Too bad I didnt get a case where I could mount the card vertically as the side of it honestly doesnt look too good.

BossRSA 1 point 20 months ago

As long as it suits you, it's serving it's purpose! I'm happy with my 1060 SC :)

oneflygtiguy 5 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

Super original down to the red. Still gets and up vote for sure.

Lager11B submitter 3 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

Agreed. I thought Super Original Black and Red First Build Name was too long though. Haha.

oneflygtiguy 5 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

Regardless of originality or not the alternating red and black blended smoothly through the build is certainly not 'norm' and deserved an up vote for your execution alone.

OfficialP90 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

This is one of the coolest and most unique orange rigs I've seen in way too much time. Beautifully done man!

Lager11B submitter 3 Builds 2 points 20 months ago

Must just be the pictures but the build Is definitely red. Hope you still like it though!

Chaptorial 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

Very nice. I like the color scheme you have going on and well done on the cable management. +1

I'm looking to use this motherboard for an upgrade from Bloomfield to Kaby Lake and its nice to see it in a completed build. This board has 1x M.2 Socket (Key E) for use with a wireless network adapter. Like yourself I'm not looking to go SLI at the moment so I'll have an available PCI-E slot open.

Any other reason in particular why you didn't use that slot (M2) for the wireless adapter?

Lager11B submitter 3 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

Not sure I understand the question completely. This board has tons of slots on it. It has 2 M2 slots and I wish I would have bought an M2 SSD but I just didnt know about them when I started out on this project. I bought a traditional SSD early on and besides saving some cable management I didnt think it was worth the price to change to M2 at that point. The board does have built in wireless which I havent used. I like to do some gaming and unfortunately cannot be hardwired so I wanted to get a really nice wireless card. If you saw my review of the ASUS card I was not disappointed. I caught it on sale at $60 bucks and if you are considering it I would say just keep an eye out for another sale like that. I guess the part I dont understand is using a wireless adapter in the M2 slot. Didnt know you could do that. Ive only seen USB and PCI adapters.

Chaptorial 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

Yeah while researching your motherboard I found that in addition to the two M.2 slots it also has a third M.2 Socket (Key E) which supports M.2 WiFi cards. However considering I'll have an open PCI-E slot and after reading your review and recommendation on the Asus wireless adapater, I'm going to go that route.

Appreciate the response and again nice work on your build.

The_dank_lord 1 point 20 months ago

I think the 240ex looks awesome but everyone says it leaks, how does yours perform?

Lager11B submitter 3 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

No problems so far. Seemed to have pretty good ratings overall so hopefully I dont have to deal with that. If I do I will be sure to make an update.

adomm420 1 Build 1 point 19 months ago

You should of bought asus strix z270e, it has wifi ac.

Lager11B submitter 3 Builds 2 points 19 months ago

Wanted to get the dedicated wifi card for the performance. Not sure how the on-board performance would compare but I can say I am not disappointed in this wfi adapater at all.

adomm420 1 Build 1 point 19 months ago

It's asus, so it should be as good. Nice build by the way

aesiva 1 point 19 months ago

Nice build! Absolutely love the color scheme and clean look. Have a question -- any reason for the 750w PSU? I wouldn't expect everything to use so much power but I'm new to this.

Lager11B submitter 3 Builds 1 point 19 months ago

This was one of the first parts I got. It was during Black Friday sales and it was probably just on a sale that made it cheaper then a 650w or 550w. It is definitely overkill for the setup though.

Well I guess the name IS super original. Great job btw. I was planning on building something similar to this this summer. My part list is almost identical lmao. +1

gomess023 1 point 15 months ago

Looks amazing fam!

plzDonateAgame 1 point 15 months ago

Why are the reds orange? Amazing build and very clean btw!

Lager11B submitter 3 Builds 1 point 15 months ago

Not sure but you arent the first to mention that. Used a nice camera. Guess it was just the lighting in the room. Thanks for the compliments!

plzDonateAgame 1 point 14 months ago

Weird, You're welcome!

JGryph 1 point 13 months ago

Just used your build as an example of what I could do with case fans in my first build ever that will be using the P400 case! Thanks so much! Went with Blue Aerocool fans :)

Aryan1027 1 point 10 months ago

Does the motherboard have 9 screw holes to screw down the motherboard? Like a normal ATX MB

Great build, I am getting this exact case and was wondering if the light was only green since I want my build to be black and red. Great job men!

Lager11B submitter 3 Builds 1 point 6 months ago

Honestly dont remember but I think the LED on the case switches between red, blue and green or something like that. I have mine on red obviously.

RoastyToast408 1 Build -1 points 20 months ago

Looks amazing man!!!! same theme as my build. may i suggest a different case to display ur beautiful build? like the corsair 400c . love how ur using a z270!! once again sick red/black scheme

BossRSA 3 points 20 months ago

Not OP, but what's wrong with the P400? I own a 400C too, and while it's an awesome case, I don't see what exactly makes it a better buy (except maybe for the latch-openable window and slightly more understated design).

RoastyToast408 1 Build -3 points 20 months ago

Exactly for the reason you stated. i like the case he is using but i feel the window is restricting. and the dust covers on the 400c for the front, top, and bottom are very well made and easy to maintain. minus having to take off the back panel to pop off the front. both cases have pros and cons, i guess its just whatever works/looks the best to the individual user. i also like the removable powersupply/driver panels instead of the fully blocked off look

BossRSA 1 point 20 months ago

Yup, I had to choose between P400/400C too, and ended up going for the 400C because of the less "futuristic" look.

RoastyToast408 1 Build 0 points 20 months ago

im not saying he should just an option if he wasnt getting the full look into his case or the ability to open ur case with the door handle that he was maybe looking for. i like the case he chose also, just not the window on the case

Lager11B submitter 3 Builds 2 points 20 months ago

Just took a look at the 400C, its a nice looking case. The case was one of the first pieces I picked up on a black friday sale. Honestly, this was my first build so I wasnt really sure what to look for. Just liked the looks and the price. Some things I found I didnt really like about it were that I couldnt top mount the radiator so I dont think the airflow is really optimal. Also would have been nice to have a hole in the PSU shroud to route the 8 pin cable up to the GPU but thats not really a big deal. Otherwise I like the case and enjoyed building in it. The little extra red lighting it provides is nice.
