I wanted a high end system, but wanted at least some bang for buck. Given that (and a monochrome with rgb accents theme) I decided on the following list. For those that don't know, Shruikan is a tormented dragon in the Inheritance Series by Christopher Paolini.
Ryzen R5 1600: saved money over 1600x knowing the overclocking performance is nearly identical. Also very close to 7700k in higher resolution gaming and less money for more cores (and less power consumption). The upgrade path was also more appealing to me as well considering cost and AMD's commitment to the AM4 B350 platform.
Aorus 1080: absolute beast of a card with a phenomenal cooler. The factory overclock settings make getting more performance as easy as free software and two clicks.
SSD and HDD: smaller SSD for boot and programs while HDD is for media, games, and large files. A better SATA3 would be nice, an NVME PCIe SSD would be even better but it wasn't in the budget and the relative performance gain to price is nearly impossible to justify for my use case.
Case: looks great, easy to build in, great thermals. Need I say more?
Fans: needed some rgb for a little flair and fun and the HD120s work very well.
Cooler: integrated very well with the fans and Corsair Commander Pro. Hard not to spend up a little to keep everything cool and quiet with custom fan curves. The fit with Trident Z ram is tight, you have to move the cooler to just the right position so the ram falls along the curve of the fans, otherwise the widest part of the fans (the screw hole area and halfway between the holes) put pressure on the top edge and would likely cause problems.
PSU: on sale and black cables, perfect for this build and future upgrades.
