Description

This is a continuation of my Bloodworks PC. This time I upgraded to an Intel i9 7980XE. Before putting it in my system I of course delided it. I also went from a Rampage VI Apex to a Rampage VI Extreme and to compensate the lower power pin count I got an EK Monoblock to watercool my VRMs as this CPU can pull 600W+ at load.

Overclocking this beast has been incredibly fun the 7980XE is the best overclocker I have ever had which is insane considering that it's an 18 core CPU. I can get it up to 4.8Ghz on all cores at 1.255V. The CPU Z score is 13,000 multi core and 571 single core. For comparison a stock Threadripper 1950X scores 8,696

multi core.

I do have to say that the memory controller on these HCC chips seems to be noticeably weaker than the LCC chips. My 64GB kit of Trident Z could hit 3800 on my 7900X but only gets 3650mhz on this CPU.

Watercooling the VRM does seem to make my overclocks more stable compared to people air cooling their Rampage I think it's more likely that having my VRM full power instead of spread spectrum is helping my overclock more than my CPU just happening to be some god overclocker. Temps are around 40c idle and 85c load which goes to show how much power this chip pulls because most people watercooling their X299 VRMs get around 60c at load.

Overall I think this upgrade was defiantly worth it as my raw multi core performance is up more than 80% compared to my 7900X.

When you buy only the best of the best lol. If I were to spend this much on my pc, I’d buy fitting made of only the finest platinum lol

My water pumps cost $500 alone once you get into high end watercooling it becomes expensive very quickly.

What parts did you use exactly? I am planning on doing my own custom loop when Pinnacle Ridge comes out or Coffee Lake if Pinnacle Ridge sucks.

Saying that your pump alone costs 500 is a little misleading, you have 2 pumps and a top that add up to that much lol. I do have to ask, haven't other people found out that those kinds of dual pump tops actually restrict more than they help?

I kinda agree with the comment about this build being boring. It doesn't look too different from the much cheaper builds besides having expensive parts.

  • 2 points

This is indeed a really powerfull build!

Hitting 4.8GHz at just 1.255V is awesome, but 85°C is really hot for a custom loop. Maybe donwclock to 4.2-4.4GHz at around 1.15-1.225V to gain stability and longevity.

Cheers.

I upgrade every 6-8 months aftee which I sell my hardware I am really not concerned about my CPU lasting 5 years

I burned out my 6950X after 8 months but it was not delided so Intel replaced it

  • 1 point

Interesting, I thought overclocking voids the warranty.

  • 1 point

Technically it does but as long *** there is no physical damage there is no way to prove it was overclocked.

  • 1 point

You can also purchase specific overclocking warranty if you want to be absolutely sure and more "by the book".

https://click.intel.com/tuningplan/

It gives some people peace of mind when pushing for extreme overclocks.

honest i like the build but is kind boring due to not having any bends all with fittings anyone can do this

  • 2 points

I went with ridged bends for the esthetic I really like the way Maingear PCs look and I wanted to use their style. Also ridged bends are easier to take apart drain and reconstruct and I would not be able to do the kind of bend that goes to the monoblock without fittings.

  • 1 point

Y'know, this thing reaches 0+ degrees on LN2 at 6.1GHz

Using it in another PC not selling it sorry

  • 1 point

No worries, I'm buying a 7820X, maybe a 7900X if I find a really good deal on it. Also, one thing, are you going to keep the Rampage 6 Extreme when the X299 refresh comes out? Or are you getting the "Black Edition" if that becomes a thing?

  • 1 point

I highly doubt there will be a “black edition” as any upgrade to the Rampage VI would require a new chipset the only things I see changing are maybe a darker design and usb 3.2 If there is a new Rampage I will probably get it as I usually sell my old parts if I am not using them and the upgrade would not cost that much.

Hey man awesome build but I got a quick question about your mouse. I’m looking into getting it as I play a lot of FPS games, but do you find it too heavy to play FPS? I’ve head that the weight kind of drags it down and I was wondering if you had any problems. Thanks in advance, +1 for awesome build

  • 1 point

I have heard a lot of people saying it's too heavy for FPS. I have very large hands so for me it's just right. If your hands are big I highly recommend.

  • 1 point

Looking for a small mouse you can consider the IMPACT, Gladius or Pugio. They are smaller lower in their weight. As Redcraft773 noted, the Spatha is nice for us that have big hands.

How much did the 7980XE boost your performance gaming wise? Is there a point of having more than 4 or 6 cores in a CPU other video editing and streaming? And if possible can you compare the fps score you get for a 7980XE to a 7700k or a Ryzen 1600?

  • 2 points

Depends on the game engine generally a high clock speed 4 core to 7 Thread CPU is going to be the best overall choice but there are some games with heavy AI that can benefit. I have seen this in my own build playing games like total war. For the vast majority though mainstream CPU is the best choice. Of course going with a high end CPU like this allows you to have the best of both worls especially if you overclock the CPU to have both cores & frequency.

Hey man, I'm gonna do a similiar build. I just wanted to know why all of the 7980xe Rampage Extreme VI builds on here have 1500w power supplies. Is it completely necessary or will I be okay with an EVGA 1200 Supernova? Thanks man

  • 1 point

Depends on that Vcore your going to run and how many GPUs you have. My build takes about 1200W at load so if you are running just one card 1200W is fine however if you have SLI then I recommend at least 1300W.

I think they would be about the same, the 7900X is more power efficient because it's a maxed out die while the 7920X is the most cut down. I would expect there to be no thermal difference as the 7920 may dissipate heat better but take significantly more power.

bo1, waw, bo3, mw1, bo2, mw3,mw2, other cods, is my ranking order

  • 1 point

I'm the same boat as you in terms of experience playing all of the cods, and mine would probably be bo2, mw3, bo3, mw2, bo1, then ghosts. the rests are a toss up as i didn't enjoy them much.

mw1,mw2,mw3, black ops is cool but has network issues. but thats just me. Modern Warfare has had more changes per game then Black ops, or Cod in general now, same game just barely any changes. i think the gun balance was much better for blops 3. IW is so AR dominant that it doesn't make it as fun as blops 3. I only really play competitive (gamebattles/wagers/tournaments) and personally speaking I think that IW was a much more "random" game than blops 3. That's just coming from opinions on the map design, specialist abilities, perk layout, and weapon balance. To each his own though.
