Description

Just an upgrade from my OLD OLD PC! Basically use this rig for moderate (older genre) gaming.. Held off on 1440p GPU due to lack of affordable sub $400-500 G-synch 120 Mhz panels and the Video cards that can actually push them at that resolution.... I am a happy customer nonetheless! :)

Just updated NEW (NON MIRRORED) pics 2/10/2015. Enjoy guys... Best system by a long shot.. Cable management is a lil shotty :\ FYI: Seasonic PSU Cables are short!

In my opinion, if this build is for mainly gaming you don't need that i7-4790k.You could have gone with an i5-4690k, and then gone with a GTX 970 with the money you saved which will play most games at 1440p

I highly doubt that cost-effectiveness was on his mind, given the MVII Hero, 16GB Ripjaws, 850 Pro, X-650 KM3, and the Noctua fans. Sure the GTX 960 isn't the greatest choice given its disappointing performance, but everyone has a first time. Plus, the GTX 970 fiasco really ruined the year for Maxwell and most likely bring AMD down as well, given that GCN 1.2 also uses an compression algorithm-supported irregular bus that also connects ROPs in different numbers to crossbars.

Hold up, this is my first time hearing about the 960's performance in a negative light. Based on the video that LTT did a while back, it looked absolutely stellar. Can somebody explain for me what turned out to be so disappointing about it?

Performance that hangs around the R9 285 in most cases. SLI doesn't scale well, less than a GTX 970 or R9 290X, even less at 4K and 1440p.

Either that's just what GM206 is like, or Nvidia is skimping on VRAM again. I personally would have liked to see what a 3GB 192-bit card would be like, in other words, 192-bit done properly, something that Nvidia hasn't gotten around to doing in the retail channel in the past 3 years.

but i heard a 970 is having problems.

  • 3 points

Not really. They just failed to mention at launch that it only can access 3.5gb of its VRAM. All the benchmarks are still true that it is a great card for 1080p

People don't shell out $350-400 in Q1 2015 to buy a "great card for 1080p". It still works well on 1440p.

Sure but at higher resolutions you're gonna start to wish you had the full 4gb.

If the GTX 780 can do just fine at 1440p, the GTX 970 will have no problems even with 3GB of VRAM.

Not many games could bring the 970 to its full potential of 4GB, and a benchmark I believed showed that the only game that could was BF4 on 4k, even then it was too laggy for gaming. I seen this in Linus's stream if you're wondering.

Behold the elusive and rare left handed case. Nice find!

It isn't. The logos on everything are reversed, so the pictures have just been flipped. That's just a regular R5.

I was. Maybe I should have said " elusive and rare left handed unicorn case"

Indeed.

Why are the pictures flipped?

Great build man, but what's with the pictures? Haha either way you have my vote!

Those pictures are hella confusing.

How is the power supply? I wanted to buy that exact model

WHY IS EVERYTHING BACKWARDS?

I felt so weird looking at this the first time.

OMG>>>>> SORRY Guys.. My webcam was set to MIRROR lol... The pics are mirrored! My bad :( As for the Video card... I had 3x 970 GTX'es before this 960.. ALL of the 970's HAD HORRIBLE Coil whine noise.. I had the MSI GTX 970 4GB GAMING Golden edition.. It was a fail.. Bad coil whine noise... Then i bought a Asus Strix 970 GTX 4GB.. Bad coil whine noise... These 2 cards were virtually silent at idle and load. Then I bought the Gigabyte 970 GTX G1... It had little coil whine noise but the FANS sounded like Jet Turbine Engines, even at IDLE!!! I was like.. OH HELL NO.. And so i opted out for a 960 GTX... No coil whine noise :0 It's just a fill in card until decent cards come out for 1440p resolutions along with $400-500 Sub 120 mhz refresh rate Gsynch monitors. I'm gonna wait about a 1-2 yrs for those..

Sorry about the pics.. I'll try to repost some new ones soon with a real digital camera not my webcam :0

System is DEAD SILENT>.. I can hear myself breath!!! even while having Multiple WOW and Secondlife .exe's running... It's awesome.. I <3 it!

Oh.. a lil update..

Benchmarks in 3D mark with the MSI GOLDEN EDITION 970 GTX 4GB and the Asus Strix 970 GTX 4GB were virtually identical

1: Ice Storm: High 18,000's 2: Cloud Gate Low 29,000's 3: Sky Diver Low - Mid 27,000's 4: Firestrike = Super High 9,000,s with sometimes Super Low 10,000's

The G1 Gigabyte did roughly 1-2% better at the expense of LOUD Fan Noise! (no way to lower the fan speed it in the bios) Gigabyte idled at 29' whereas the Strix and the MSI 970's were 55-57' at idle and 61' at load (running benchmarks) The G1 I think was like 40's at Load.. But yeah the noise was intolerable, for me anyway..

I dont use the PC for high end PC games.. but in WOW at Ultra max settings I will tell u that there is no difference between a 960 and a 970. Secondlife has really no difference at all. I'm not sure about high end games.. System is DEAD SILENT... Idles at 34-38' and it's in Turbo mode "ALL CORES synched' to 4.4 Ghz using the ROG Feature and the High Performance mode. Didn't even have to OC it passed that..

At first i got a PC Mate MSI Mobo and that thing Id'ed at 40+ C.. It was a $60 MOBO.. I quickly swapped that out for the ROG Hero and temp dropped by 6' degrees. I <3 this build... Everything is SILENT!!

960 GTX Benchmarks are here:

1: Ice storm: High 17,000's 2: Cloud Gate: High 24,000's 3: Sky Diver: Mid 21,000's 4: Firestrike: Mid 6,000

It says your GPU is 57 °C idle... and 51 °C under load... that makes no sense. I'm guessing this is a typo, so what were the temps supposed to say?

Oh hey man... Nah.. it's cuz with these cards... the Fans are silent.. When the GPU Gets taxed and it only does for me during super high intensive Benchmarks.. the Fans actually turn on and cool the Video Card. It's weird how it works :0

I have multiple instances of Moderate 3D games open and my system is dead silent. If i played super high 3D intensive games the fans would spin up and cool the video card thus reducing the temps. But yeah.. Most of these 9x Series NVIDIA cards (with the exception of the G1 Gigabyte) have silent profile fans (from what I heard) The fans dont even spin until the GPU is stressed.. I haven't ran benchmarks for very long so I imagine 51' gets higher.. but the Fans dont even turn on unless the GPU hits 60' 61 and when the Fans spin up they cool the Card.

The G1 Gaming 970 GTX sounds like a turbine engine and idles at 29' because the fans are always on. It goes I think 10' more (from what i recall) when stressed.. The other 9x series cards with silent profile fans idle at 55-57' and go slightly down when stressed because the fans actually kick in :0

The fans are just ugly. I mean that the build is still good like the core i5 and the gtx 9)0, but the only thing that are off is the poo brown fans.

nice build, I'm getting same case soon. is it silence? I know it's not as silence as non-windowed version but still, can you hear noise?
