Edit: Thank PCPP for the feature! So excited! Thank you all for your positive comments - it makes all of the hard work that much more worth it!
Hope you all enjoy this write up and photos as I did building my new desk and PC!
So I built my first PC around this time last year and man - I was hooked. I slowly began with an upgraded GPU, memory and PSU. After I started seeing the performance and efficiency gains - I moved up to the Formula mobo and SLI 980Ti Hybrids. The next evolution came next:
About 2 months ago, I began my search for a desk that could hold 3 monitors and still keep my PC off the ground (and visible) - none existed. I then decided I was going to build my own. I drew it up and was on my way. The desk is made of red oak (trim and unfinished 3 1/4" flooring) and 2x4 framing. I then finished it in tung oil. For the frame, I bought 2x2 thin wall steel, welded the frame up, wire brushed the surface and then applied a clear satin sealer.
Besides weighing a metric ton, this desk achieves everything I wanted in a desk. I truly like how I have some upper shelves and a huge area behind my monitors for my cables to live, makes cable management a breeze.
So after a couple weeks of long nights I got the desk home and decided I wanted a PC to match the level of fit and finish I felt I achieved in the desk. So I ordered up the parts I was missing and set off assembling the following:
CPU: i6700K - Popular and stable. I run mine conservatively at 4.5 Ghz and it powers through anything that I need.
CPU Cooler: Using an H100i v2 with 2 Corsair High Performance SP120's in pull, exhaust. The SP's can get loud when they reach 2300 rpm but it's very rare they ever push up that high.
Motherboard: Basically my requirements were RGB lighting, M.2 functionality and clean lines. The Asus Formula VIII (despite the price) has been awesome to work with. Sound quality is excellent I might add.
RAM: 2 x 8GB Corsair Dominator 3200 Mhz - fast and looks great with the light bar upgrade.
GPU's: 2 x EVGA GTX 980 Ti Hybrids in SLI. The sweet, succulent center pieces of the build. Love, love, love these cards. Run at 48C and 46C at full load. The card can both run 1570 mhz and 3970 mhz OC's comfortably.
8362 - FireStrike Ultra http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9711881
14319 - FireStrike Extreme http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9697230
GPU Coolers: Using 4 High Performance SP120's in push/pull (2 each card) as intake to my case
Other case fans: 1 AF120 High Performance as intake on the bottom front of the case, 1 AF120 High Performance as the top exhaust, 1 Noctua NF-A14 2000 PWM as rear exhaust
Case: Phanteks Entho Evolv ATX - Gray: Love this damn case, cable management is awesome, made a few mods to make the work the way I want but my temps have been solid. I also love that it is color neutral and I can use my LED's to change the feel of my PC.
1 x Dell S2716DG - Love this thing! 144hz, 1440p, 1ms, DP and HDMI ports. Looks fantastic for a TN panel once properly calibrated. I run my PS4 on it and it does a great job with scaling up 1080p. The thin bezel is a really classy touch.
2 x DellS2740L - Bought these for work and are the best bang for you buck IPS monitors that I have seen. Really awesome productivity and secondary monitors.
AKG K712 - unreal clarity and accurate representation of music and audio. Nothing crazy in the low end but I have some Massdrop Fostex TH-X00's on the way to cover that.
Schiit Audio Modi 2 Uber DAC - great connectivity and the sound is amazing for the price. Super clean aesthetics too. I don't use any equalizers or enhancements anywhere and the sound is on point.
Schiit Audio Magni 2 Uber Headphone Amp - The K712's are tough to drive but this handles them with ease. The uber version has a preamp out that is really nice to drive active speakers or in my case my 2.1 Bose set up.
Bose Companion 5 Speakers - pack a punch in a small footprint
Astro A50s - overall I am happy with this wireless headset - use them for PS4 when I need to use a mic
Future upgrades: Samsung 950 Pro 512 GB M.2, 2 x 1440p monitors for surround gaming
Let me know what you think! Any comments or help is appreciated!
Mods - Went to try an update my parts list because the fans were wrong and I accidentally deleted my entire post, sorry!
