Description

This is a build that is 2 years in the making for me...

First off I would like to say I would NOT recommend this build to anyone, unless you have just boat loads of cash collecting dust in a Giant duck tales vault someplace. This is nothing more than a "Because I can", and a "Because I want to" type of build. There are far better options that serve a much better price/performance ratio. My previous build was on a 3930k and it was doing just fine for me, and I knew 2 years ago that I would be moving into the Broadwell-E HEDT lineup when it came around, just was hoping to put more $'s toward other components rather than the almost all of it to the CPU.

This build is ultimately being put together to explore the 8/12k surround possibilities once the 1080 Ti's hit the market (if they do), and for VR, and for a light 2D/3D render work.

I have a 4k monitor set aside, and should hopefully have 2 more in the next coming months (The CPU kind of ate into my budget for the extra monitors), after the 1080Ti's get put in.

Lastly for everyone that is going to say something along the lines of "Why do you need X,Y,Z" or "Waste of Money", I would refer you back to the 1st paragraph I wrote.

I'm still in what I call the "Stability" portion of my build, where I basically run the computer at bone stock for a few weeks just to see how it performs as a baseline. In the next few weeks I'll have more benchmarks completed, but I may/may not have them updated on here.

If you have any questions or want to see anything specific regarding this build, please comment / message me and let me know.

So uhh, if you ever decide to build a new pc, you can just give this to me just because you can :D

I have been giving away pc components to some people on my twitch at random times. Gave away a few SSD's, cases, psu's, haven't given away a CPU or GPU yet...kind of pricey to give away...lol

Its by no means consistent or even guaranteed that I'll give something away, but it has happened.

But can it run minesweeper?

  • 1 point

Um...Actually I don't know...I haven't tried...but I'm definitely going to see if I can find it now...however I do know it'll only run MahJong tiles at 1024x768, in windowed mode. Zuma's Revenge on the other hand runs at full screen....at 800x600...144FPS :)

Definetaly post pics once you got those surround 4K monitors up and going. And i know you cant get new cables with your PSU but maybe get a corsair AX1200 or somthing with custom sleeves. That would get the build looking super clean. But other than that great build man. Cant wait to see the 1080tis's either. Enjoy that 6950X!

  • 1 point

Yeah I debated getting a different PSU, but I cant justify buying a new PSU just for aesthetics, especially when I have a perfectly good working PSU that I have enjoyed for years, especially when I found out the 6950x was going to be ~$1700US I just couldn't see about another $250+ custom cables, just for looks. It hurt, but I figured at this point it might be in the works down the road, and I'll definitely have pics up of the surround 4k, and the 1080Ti's (if/when they release :(...still only rumors I think).

I also have new pics I will probably be uploading after work today of a bit better cable management, and Overclocking numbers...I'm looking at about 36% OC on the CPU (4.2Ghz).

stunning build man just one question, are you streaming ?

  • 1 point

Yes, I do stream. twitch.tv/snyprmasta I'm not very regular at streaming, I try and stream for 2 hours or so after work everyday.

  • 1 point

Dang! You could've bought 2 1080's at the same price..

  • 2 points

Yeah, but my 980Ti's are still doing just fine, and I'm waiting for the 1080Ti's because the rumor is they may have 12GB of VRAM, and I'm planning on getting 2 of those, as I have multi-4k monitors in the works.

Such a beautiful build with great components in a awesome case... But just one question... What about the cables man? WHAT ABOUT THE CABLES MAN? :/ Please do your components and the case justice and fix them :)

  • 1 point

Yes, I will. I've been taking apart, moving components around, and trying to get rid of a rattle in the radiator mounting tray, so cabling at this point is less down my priority list until I can ensure a stable running machine, and a stable overclock.... and there is a reason I didn't take pictures of the other side of the case ;) Its a nightmare back there...

  • 1 point

Haha fair enough :) I got the same case so cables were a priority for me even if I'm going to upgrade cables and whatnot in the future. I hope to see it updated in the future with better cable management. :D

  • 1 point

I inquired with CableMod to see if they made cables for my PSU, but due to the unique connectors on my PSU, they do not, so I'm stuck with OEM cables. I will definitely have a much better managed interior with less fan/pump cables going all over the place, but the back is going to be somewhat of a challenge...

What have you overclocked your 6950x to?

  • 1 point

Currently I'm running stable at 4.2Ghz (36%) on all cores, if I just push a single core further, I can have a single core(for me its core1) go to 4.6Ghz, but I wanted to have the stability across the board, so I'm staying at 4.2Ghz. That is also just using a 1 touch OC via AI Suite, so if I really wanted to spend the next week or so I can probably run stable at 4.3 or 4.4 pretty easily, just been slightly lazy on that front for now, since I have a stable 4.2 that took almost no time.

Hey I was wondering how the SSD's are working for you, are they competable with other SSD's like and 850 evo

  • 1 point

I'm not sure I follow? I have the 950 Pro, 840 Evo as standalone drives (the 950 pro = primary drive, and RAMDisk Backup), the 840 Evo, as a storage drive for documents, and the like. While I have the 2 Corsair 960GB LE's in Raid 0, as my Steam&Install's folder.

I'm assuming your referring to my Corsair LE's 960GB drives...They run in Raid 0, and I have no complaints on the drives. However I have read, and seen reviews on the smaller sized drives not performing to the 500+MB/s speeds. But so far, I cannot complain about any of these drives.

I'd love to have 128gb of ram, I imagine being able to open an infinite number of tabs in chrome, or not because of memory leaks. What's the most ram you've ever used?

  • 1 point

In my desktop/workstation, 128 is the most I've had. however I have a few servers that run more than that, but mostly because I use them as a render farm or for multiple workstation VM's.

  • 1 point

I mean of the 128, have you ever overspilled your ram? I guess for your purposes, you could come close to using all your available ram

  • 1 point

No, the most usage I've seen to date has been about ~70GB of it. That's doing a Maya render, premier render, having a movie playing, while having every favorite open in chrome, and 5 full games running in windows (crysis 3, farcry 4, Doom, Dragon Age: Inquisition, FFXIV), and streaming to twitch. But that was more of a CPU load test vs anything else, it happened to eat ~70GB of RAM, but I'm pretty sure that was mostly because of the render's.

  • 1 point

Cool! I wish I could try maxing out your Ram. Thanks for the answer, hopefully I can try it one day.

  • 1 point

I will have about 100GB of it reserved for a RAMDisc, and the remaining 28GB available for system memory, soooo I guess that's kind of maxing it out? :P

  • 1 point

Definitely have to run World Community Grid or Boinc on this

  • 1 point

haha WCG, not so much :P IBM's still got the market on that, and I'm pretty sure they will be eating my 6950x alive, but it would be a fun attempt :P

Why an H80I on a 6950X? Need to work on the cable management too..

  • 1 point

My cable management has improved since these pictures were uploaded, I have made sure that my cables are now adequate for the build. Also the H80i was free, and needed a decent cooler without going custom. So I figured Free.99 + decent overclocking headroom = Win for me. I've finally gotten to 43% overclocked as well, doing 4.4-4.5 on core 2 for single threaded apps, while 4.3 across the remaining cores.

Mine is running just fine, haven't had any problems with it in the least. I did just get a notification for a new BIOS update though as of this morning (9/19), which I'll probably postpone until next week.

why didnt you get a fully modular power supply? It would have looked nicer

  • 1 point

Because I didn't want to buy a new power supply when the Silencer Mk III i had works great, and does what I need it to do. So that cost was $0 for me. And spending $XXX to move up to Fully modular from Semi-Modular didn't make sense to me.

Great build, but why the 980TIs and not 1080s?

  • 2 points

Because I'm waiting for the 1080Ti's and I dont want to upgrade from 1080 to 1080Ti's, when I can just hold out with my 980Ti's and then upgrade when they 1080 Ti's drop.

Why don't you get A nvidia Titan X graphics card?

  • 1 point

Because I have never been a fan of the TItan's I've always thought they were confused cards, not sure if they were supposed to be workstation cards, or gamer cards.

I agree this is a great build, however it does put some money on places that I do not need, such as the software, Optical Drive, headphones, and case fans. The cost of this build is almost 2x more than the total amount of money spend on the hardware I purchased. The purchase price of the items in my PCPartPicker are misleading, yes they are a represented value of current market, however they do not represent the actual cost that left my wallet.

Total cost for my parts was sub $3k, and catered a bit more to what I wanted. But otherwise, this is a wonderful build that very few people would be able to utilize to its fullest.
