Description

This was my first PC build ever. I researched the parts for months and saved up until I could buy it all. The name was inspired by the amount of MSI components. Their logo is a dragon, so I named my machine dragon, just in old Norse language.

My main use is Video Editing, Audio Engineering, 3D Design, and other Creative Work. I just had an old laptop before and was much in need of an upgrade for a couple years now. My old specs compared to this is actually a hilarious comparison.

I had an HP Pavilion DV7. Here are the specs:
Intel Core i5-2410M 2.3GHz 2-core/4-thread CPU
Radeon HD 7400M Series (1GB) GPU
Hitachi 700GB HDD 6GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM
The rest doesn't really matter and I didn't feel like searching through my laptop to find all the details. Suffice it to say that it couldn't edit 1080p video footage, let alone 4K, which is what I work with.

A comparison render in Blender is this:
Low Quality Settings @ 1080p on the DV7: 1+hrs (CPU Cycles Render because the GPU was not good)
High Quality Settings @ 1080p on the Dreki: 1.3 minutes (GPU Cycles Render)
Same Settings on the Dreki: 5.5 minutes (CPU Cycles Render) That blew my mind. I did not realize how terrible my laptop was.

UserBenchmark Rating was good too:
UserBenchmarks: Game 98%, Desk 87%, Work 97%
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700 - 87.7%
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070 - 103.6%
SSD: WD Blue 3D SATA M.2 500GB - 105.8%
HDD: WD Blue 2TB (2015) - 86.9%
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 C16 2x16GB - 106.1%
MBD: MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC (MS-7B85)

I am no computer expert, so I haven't done any overclocking. But I am satisfied with the performance, so I am not super anxious to try that out. Overall, the whole system works well. I should eventually get a third party cooler to keep temps even lower, but it is fine for now.

I am very pleased with this build and am excited about future upgrades with it.

The screenshots are of different windows during a High Quality Cycles Render and while idle.

Part Reviews

CPU

Great CPU! I am just using the stock cooler, but it still performs really good. My main use is video editing, and it gets the job done quickly.

Memory

This RAM is really good! I have it running at the 3200MHz that was advertised and it is all running smoothly. My system is very quick to respond and function. I love Corsair.

Storage

My last PC did not have an SSD. I am seeing the benefits regularly. My bootup times are less than 20 seconds where they used to be over 2 minutes. I like WD a lot which is why I chose this drive over a Samsung or Crucial budget drive. Just a good and reliable brand.

Storage

WD is my go to. I considered the Seagate Barracuda, but have friends who have used a lot of Seagate drives and they've regularly failed on them. I have never had a WD drive fail on me or any of my friends. It stores files and that's what it is supposed to do.

Video Card

I found this lightly used on EBay. Still had the packaging and port covers. Performance is amazing! I render 3D animations in Blender and the speed increase over my CPU or my old laptop is ridiculous. Highly recommend this GPU.

Case

This was one of the first parts I settled on. I wanted a cheap priced case with high priced quality... like pretty much everyone would. This filled in all the check boxes. It is a great case with great features and is easy to build in. I would recommend this for any budget. Cable management was easy in my opinion. But I have never built a PC before. It feels solid a durable. Highly recommend!

Power Supply

Solid, well-constructed, modular. It is a great PSU. I couldn't recommend it more! Corsair quality is very impressive.

Operating System

It is windows...it works...it is the standard PC OS. Haven't used Linux, didn't really want to.

Case Fan

Good fans. Seem pretty quiet to me, but system noise doesn't really bother me anyways. Price is fantastic.

Keyboard

Really solid keyboard. I have not used mechanical before, so I am still getting used to the bigger keys, but I like the feel. I frequently hit double keys, but that is just because I used slim profile laptop keys for years.

Mouse

Great mouse. Comfortable in the hand. I like that you can cycle through different colors for the LED. Price is good too.

I wanted to do a build with any Ryzen 7 in it for my birthday but couldn't get the money together in time. It's a very nice build, I wanted to know about the Cougar Attack keyboard and if it was RGB backlit. Right now I'm looking to assemble a Dream PC that would last long for 15+ years.

It is note RGB, at least the one I have. There may be a different version, but I am not sure. It is red backlit, though, which matches my colors more, so I am okay with it. It is a very nice keyboard in my opinion.
