Description

I call this build "The Gainer" since it will be slowly gaining strength over the summer. I plan on getting an I7 4790k, a new gpu (haven't chosen one yet since newer line of gpu's coming out soon), an EVGA 220-G2-0750-XR psu, some new ram, and few different custom things I plan on doing w/ custom sleeving and making a custom psu shroud.

One problem i ran into was the front case fans i can not reach the cords to the motherboard :. I don't have a molex connector or w/e it is needed for the fan volt controller for the front of the case. Any feedback on what i should do to maintain cable management with getting the 2 front fans to reach the motherboard would be much appreciated. This case was fun building in compared to my previous NZXT Source 220. Much more room on the back side to route your cables. I think there is about 1.5 inch clearance between the back and the panel for routing cables :D. I removed all the HDD bays since I wont be using them and in the future plan on doing custom liquid cooling. I am open to suggestions on GPU's and RAM. If i get any type of 4k, it will be a 4k television, i have no plans on getting a 4k monitor anytime soon. If i ever get a 4k monitor it would probably be at least a year or so.

All the prices that are $0.00... All either are reused from previous setup or were given to me from family and friends!!

Part Reviews

CPU

4.2 ghz OC.. could prob get more out of it, but got no idea on overclocking. Im much noob lol EDIT 4/23/15 learned how to properly overclock my cpu and got it to 4.6 ghz with max temps of 65c.. could possibly get more out of it but i dont think i will press my luck.

CPU Cooler

CPU temps are very nice and cool while idle and under load!! I don't think I have seen the cpu go over 44c yet under load.

Thermal Compound

Not much to say.. thermal compound, helps keep my cpu nice and cool

Motherboard

Either I am very noobish or my motherboard doesnt want me to put in my own voltage settings for overclocking, that is why i give 3 stars.

Memory

Served me well when i had this paired with my older build w/ the AMD A8-5600k when it first came out. One of the sticks of ram starting to show its age and is ready for a funeral soon :\

Storage

Best HDD I have owned so far, fast boot up speeds for a hdd! :D

Video Card

When i first got this gpu 3-4 years ago, I was able to max just about every game I played. Now it can't max most games anymore. Time for a replacement this summer.

Case

Best case I have ever worked with so far with cable management and has dust filters!! :D

Power Supply

Served me well over the years when i had my AMD A8-5600k and current gpu paired with it. Will have to upgrade soon once i get my I7-4790k and newer gpu.

Optical Drive

Not much to say.. burns dvd's and cd's

Operating System

IMO best O.S. I have ever owned. Tried Windows 8.1 for a day or 2 and did not like at all and after some time going thru diff people I managed to get a refund on it and stuck with Win7

Case Fan

Pushes ALOT of air, keeps my h100i purring like a kitten

Monitor

Pretty good monitor (i have the white version) Got no complaints with this monitor, been serving me quite well for the last 2-3 years that I have owned it. Hopefully it lasts me another 1-2 years at least before I finally pull the trigger on buying a 4k monitor

Mouse

Best mouse I have ever owned. Improved my performance in FPS games by prob 20-25% :D

Looks great!

I suggest getting a fan splitter for those twin front fans. You will only have one cable to manage and it acts as a nice long extension cord.

I will look around for one and get one asap :D. So i can look on Amazon and newegg and just search "fan splitter"?

Yeah, both companies should have some. And look at your fan cables, are they three pin or 4pin (PWM) fans? If 3 pin then buy a 3 pin splitter, but if PWM then buy a PWM splitter.

PWM is 4 pin right?

flip that psu and manage a few more cables more neatly and you have a truly pretty system. Love the use of the 7950, and I would love to see you crossfire it with another one and get a better PSU, just for the badassery of it.

just had a discussion about crossfiring it and decided i will crossfire it. Might also look into getting some backplates. If i flip the psu will the fan of it be sucking air in or blowing it out of the bottom? Im thinking of pulling air in from the bottom and front and exhausting out the top and back.

if you flip the PSU, it will suck in air from the bottom and blow it out the back, where there's a grate. Just make sure to keep the PC off carpet.

I would never ever ever have a pc on carpet.

I agree, just crossfire with the 7950! It'll give you plenty of graphics power and will give the awesomeness of having two graphics cards. But you'll definitely need a different PSU! You can also push the G3258 even more, PM me if you would like any help with that.

I plan on getting the 750w EVGA g2 or w/e the name of the psu is, and also plan on getting an i7 4790k within the next 2-3 months. I sent you a pm!

I don't know how much you paid for all this but it looks really tidy. That's good to see because I see so many budget computers that get shown no love. Good job man!

thanks!.. my gpu, ram, psu, hdd, and optical drive were all from previous builds i had. My cpu and mobo i got off of reddit for 100 w/ shipping included in the price!

What are ur average boot speeds?

Hows that mobo doing?

  • 1 point

my boot speeds aren't as good as i think they should be. Takes me about 1 minute to get to desktop. Idk if my hdd is just starting to show its age or not (hdd is about 4-5 yrs old). The motherboard is pretty good.

no prob. The motherboard is all around pretty good.. has enough usb ports for all me needs, overclocks my current cpu nicely. Planning on upgrading my cpu to the i7 4790k around Christmas time!

my case has dust filters on the front and bottom where i will be sucking air in, so i shouldn't get very much dust i think?
