Upgrades Over Time Build

by krunchi

Description

Hi everyone, this is the first build I've posted on this site, so please be nice haha.

This complete build is a result of my first build. The CPU I'm using now is the first CPU I've ever purchased and it's been working great since November 2013 (Black Friday, woot woot!). I went from a mid tower to a small mATX case because I wanted to challenge myself to get the best I could of this size. Also, I have space limitations where I live now and wanted to free up some space. So instead of starting with the internals, I based my build off the case I purchased, the BitFenix Pandora. I had done a lot of research on it and I loved how it required patience for building and organizing, but would result in a beautiful case. I ended up going with the MSI mATX mobo for gaming. Considering the airflow limitations of this case, which is a front pushed to back with 1 pull fan on top, I went with a AiO Corsair watercooler which is working great, even with overclocking. I utilized all spaces for hard drive placements, so I have a Samsung w/ Windows running, Intel SSD for extra storage and games, and dual RAID 1 WD drives for my user profile files.

I upgraded my graphics card from a GTX 770 to a GTX 980 TI because I wasn't reaching max settings on a few games and I was playing off a ASUS 144hz monitor, but not getting many frames higher than 70 to even utilize the screen. However, I ended up upgrading to a Dell 34" 1440p ultrawide montior at 60hz. 1 GTX 980 TI wasn't powering the max settings all the way, with the increased resolution I had added, so I decided to try SLI for the first time, which had a few hiccups and configurations needed before it started working properly. With all this in my case, my temps are surprising still cool. My fans only ever spin at half the max speeds they are capable of. I've overclocked my CPU to 4.4GHz, but haven't really touched my graphics cards. At this point, I'm very happy with my build. I'm able to stream my games and keep them at high settings.

Let me know what you guys think and any suggestions to make the build better :]

Build looks great. The two 980's look so good next to each other :D and your setup is awesome!

krunchi submitter 1 Build 3 points 43 months ago

Thanks! I tried hard to make it all work! However, I don't know why my EVGA SLI Bridge stopped lighting up, but it's supposed to, with the cards T_T

krunchi submitter 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

Thanks! The hardware is going to always be the hard part, but the desk and lighting (aesthetics setup) are pretty cheap! The L desk was about $90 and the lighting was only $15, all from Amazon :]

JuniorVid 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

ThatGuyLite 1 point 43 months ago

krunchi submitter 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

Thanks! I really appreciate that :]

aliencds 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

nice what monitor mounts are you using?

krunchi submitter 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

I'm using this mount: http://www.amazon.com/VIVO-Monitor-Adjustable-Articulating-STAND-V001/dp/B00B21TLQU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1442691025&sr=8-3&keywords=monitor+mount

It works for even the ultrawide monitor. It just has to be under 22lbs. These are single monitor mounts, one that I already had before doing upgrades. If you're looking for a dual monitor mount, I used this one at one point: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002R9HQLI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

That one worked with 2 24" ASUS gaming monitors. Hope this helps :]

philphaser 12 Builds 1 point 43 months ago

You kinky boy got those tissues right in reach for when surfing on those nasty websites, do you!?
; )

Very nice build…i would've loved to see a Krait MoBo in there tho.
+1

krunchi submitter 1 Build 2 points 43 months ago

Lmaooo me? Neverrr.

From what I see with the Krait, they only offer ATX, not mATX? This case is only for mATX mobos...but if there is a mATX you know of, I'd be down to change it out.

philphaser 12 Builds 1 point 43 months ago

Yeah, that's a gap to fill. Would look so marvelous in your build, fabulous! ^ ^

krunchi submitter 1 Build 2 points 43 months ago

I'm looking at the In Win 805 for my next build. When the black color becomes available, I'll have a mid tower that the Krait could sit in. That's the route I'm thinking :]

cmccarty 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

Well, I'm jelly. :) I really need to get a new desk judging by how nice your setup looks. Great build! +1 from me.

krunchi submitter 1 Build 2 points 43 months ago

Haha thanks :] I got my desk and lights from Amazon for pretty cheap! If you're interested:

Desk - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009YPRRZ8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

LED Lights - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UV9IB4W?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Didn't have to spend much to make it look nice :]

cmccarty 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

I am interested in the desk, definitely. Thing is, I'm poor. Haha. All my funds are going to upgrading my pc until it is exactly how I want it to be before I do anything else.

krunchi submitter 1 Build 2 points 43 months ago

Haha I feel ya. What are you looking to upgrade with your build? It looks great so far.

cmccarty 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

I outline it all in the description I think. I want a CPU Cooler, 16 GB of ram of at least 1866 frequency, SSD for my OS and certain programs, and either another 280x for crossfire, or maybe just a 980ti. Haha. :) and a new PSU that's 80+ gold certified, and fully modular. Also, I dont have a decent keyboard, mouse, or headset. Or speakers. Le sigh.

krunchi submitter 1 Build 2 points 43 months ago

Haha I was too busy looking at the pictures :] Budget recommendations, if you'll hear me out :D

CPU Cooler - go for a Cooler Master 212 Evo, as everyone else will probably say. Cheap, efficient, usually has a rebate going around on consumer sites

RAM - 16GB is starting to become standard, but usually not necessary. I started with 8GB, had 0 problems and loaded up 25+ Google Chrome tabs & games. I only upgraded to 16GB when I got my 2nd card, and found out that wasn't even necessary, just a bug with Nvidia and its ShadowPlay feature. The overclock of RAM didn't change much for me, but I've read that AMD builds can get speed gains.

SSD - snag a $40-50 Sandisk or Kingston 120GB at certain places. I just picked one up for a build I'm making for a family member and Micro Center had a good deal. Depending on your OS too, you can install your OS on the SSD, redirect your user profile to the Seagate and have everything install there by default. Then, those certain programs you want on your SSD, just change the install location in the wizard.

Graphics - Nice choices ;]

PSU - Great choice as well. I just came across a platinum deal if you're interested: http://slickdeals.net/f/8117032-evga-650w-platinum-p2-fully-modular-psu-70-ar-model-220-p2-0650-x1

Keyboard, Mouse, & Headset - that's all your preference haha. Are you looking into mechanical?

Speakers - Logitech has decent basic speakers ranging between $30-$100. If you reach a budget for $100, get the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 over the Logitech alternative. Huge difference that I can say with experience and speaker changes I've gone through.

Check SlickDeals for computer hardware sales. The best time to buy would be Black Friday, which is coming up. You can find some really really good savings that day, usually online too.

Hope this helps out :D and you can PM if you need help finding parts.

OCFEIND 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Nice build, I'm thinking of getting this case for a build of mine and I'm wondering how you got the BitFenix logo on the front to be that picture of a dragon instead? Looks great btw. +1

krunchi submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks! There are different versions of the BitFenix Pandora, so when searching, make sure to get the correct one based off the description. They've branded this screen feature on the front as ICON 2.0. In the Windows OS, they offer an application that I believe just runs a code on the back end. When you drop an image file over this application icon, it changes that front screen to the image you placed. However, the screen itself isn't the highest quality and darker images tend to work best to be viewed from different angles. Hope this helps!

The Samsung SSD looks perfect in this build, whats not to like?

krunchi submitter 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

Thanks! I stream sometimes, but its used more for chat. I have a gaming headset, but it gets pretty uncomfortable at times, considering how long I game. I got the Snowball for $25 from Radioshack because they were phasing them out for some reason. Paired with NoiseGator and VB Audio Cable freeware, I never have to wear a headset and my background sound doesn't bleed into the mic :]

BTW, that game is Final Fantasy XIV. The front LCD to my case has a photo of Heavensward, the recent expansion :D
