The Last of the Crates of Ren.

I just barely completed this build to replace my Z77 3770K build from 2012. With more resources and dedication this time around, I really tried not to spare any expense that I may later regret. And I think aside from my current speakers which I am looking to upgrade, I achieved that goal.

This rig is what you will find at every Stormtrooper's cubicle (they do paperwork during downtime) at Starkiller Base. The lighting presets have been customized to fade between Ominous First Order Red and Charged Plasma White.

At the core of it all is MSI's Z170A Gaming M7 motherboard. With ample USB 3.1 ports and the latest in cutting-edge Killer LAN capabilities, there isn't a droid in the galaxy that could find itself unable to interface with this Rancor of a machine.

The Corsair H100i v2 liquid cooler will keep the Core i7-6700K Skylake CPU at Hoth-frosty-cool temperatures even during the highest levels of heated star-draining laser blasts.

For when data transfer speeds are critical, such as complete station failure and/or imminent planetary collapse, the Samsung 950 Pro M.2 SSD can slice and dice your data at hyperspace speeds.

In keeping with the theme of unwavering vengeance, we have 64GB of the latest Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM (4x16GB). You'll notice they are in a matching, yet alternating Red-Black-Red-Black configuration for maximum intimidation against rebel scum.

As clean, reliable power is essential during oscillator assaults and the power fluctuations that may occur during republic-destroying laser blasts, I chose Corsair's flagship AX line of PSUs rated at 80+ Platinum efficiency (the laser cannon costs enough to power as is, am I right). This provides full modularity and interactive software control via the Corsair Link app.

Graphical prowess is indispensable when sudden redesigns of destroyed spherical battle stations occur at alarming rates, because the recently-promoted and soon-to-sustain-fatal-work-related-injuries admiral may request that you quickly draft up some 3D wireframe models of the next sphere-shaped planet-sized (that's no moon) killing machines at a moment's notice. This is why I have selected the MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X video card, with adjustable LEDs, impressive cooling system, and easy overclocking.

As the First Order Red glows throughout the case, I made sure to match it with custom painted window trim and front fan grille. Stock fans were replaced with Corsair SP120s/AF120s/SP140s with built-in First Order Red LEDs. Stock window (with unsightly fan holes) was replaced by a custom smoked acrylic sans fan-mounting holes.

A happy Stormtrooper is a productive Stormtrooper, so my goal of a complete entertainment package via hosted Plex server is accomplished with a combination of two Blu-ray drives for ripping, a WD Red 8TB HDD, and a WD Black 4TB HDD for mass media storage.

For quick & easy anti-resistance propaganda distribution, a Rosewill USB 3.0 multicard reader + 5.25 bay adapter was installed at the front of the case. Fast, flexible, functional.

Housing the entire project is the Corsair C70 Vengeance case. It provides heavy-duty durability and easy cable management with vintage Galactic Empire styling. All intake fans are filtered and internal environment has a strong positive air pressure to keep dust out and the stricken souls of our fallen enemies in.

60Hz? Not in this galaxy. We are running dual Asus VG278HV 27" 144Hz gaming monitors. When nanoseconds matter, those extra frames can allow us to receive life-saving information smoothly, and with rapid precision.

Only the best input devices will suffice at this installation. As the main interface between employee and our sensitive infrastructure, the Corsair STRAFE RGB mechanical keyboard (Cherry MX keys) paired with the Corsair M65 mouse allow for unlimited customization potential. The M65 glides like waxed butter on the fluffiest clouds above Mustafar while running atop the Corsair MM600 dual-sided mouse mat.

To top it all off, a 1:1,100,000,000,000,000 scale model of Starkiller Base's predecessor decorates the interior alongside a sculpture of our fearless leader, aggressively posed with cross-bladed lightsaber fully extended. In his honor, we even spent a hundred extra bucks getting Corsair's individually-sleeved red cables (including the 24-pin red mobo cables sold separately) to properly pay respect to the power wielded within his weapon.

For those who question this build, you don't know the power of the dark side! We have cookies! And not those disgusting raisin covered ones the Jedi eat, real cookies! The Emperor will be pleased with your work commander. As a reward, the Emperor has given the task to me to deliver you this trans-meme-tion.

+1 :D

PS - Inb4 everyone, including the staff. I commented before this was even approved to be in the completed builds section. #Nolife :D

Great build, great description, great pictures, and you filled out all of the info at the side. What more could you ask for.

This is such a sick looking build. Great job man.

InvaderGir 2 points 32 months ago

Awesome build! I really like the combination of RAM, and the pictures are very clean.

Glad you liked that, I was really tempted to go with all red since people rarely mix and match, but ended up really wanting the alternating colors to fully complete my vision. It actually cost $20 more to do red/black over all red, but I'm happy with the result. And the different RAM SKUs are the exact same hardware other than the heatsink color so I didn't think it would pose any issues.

This was a month ago, but I have to ask- how are the monitors? I'm looking into getting some and then using a Displayport to DVI-D Dual Link adapter to get 144hz from an Asus Strix GTX 1080 (will this work with the 1070? I think it also uses Displayport ports). I like the design of the monitor and it's VESA mountable which fits my needs since I want two but still want everything to look neat.

Basically, are the monitors good and would you recommend them?

Now this is an awesome build. The write up story is the best I've read on this site. I missed this when you posted it, but linked through checking on a pcpp friend Floridaboz to see if he was still active on here. Thanks for posting this greatness.

Thumbs up+1

Question- does it hurt the graphics card to keep the plastics covers in on the hdmi slots?

xyjar submitter 2 Builds 1 point 26 months ago

Nah, doesn't make a difference really. I just think it looks a little nicer to keep them covered and keep the dust out.

Ieuanam 1 point 28 months ago

@xyjar . This looks amazing however I have two questions. Both monitor related. With your monitors, are they Vesa compatible?, it looks like it and I really need this monitor to be vesa compatible. Secondly, your gpu? it has only one HDMI port which means only one monitor can connect to it. So did you use an adapter or something else? So does that monitor still run 144hz?

Ieuanam 1 point 28 months ago

I currently have the VE278H and would like to have one VG278HV

xyjar submitter 2 Builds 1 point 26 months ago

Sorry for the late reply. These monitors are VESA compatible, which was one of the selling points to me.

With the video ports, you can run two monitors at 144hz, but not using the HDMI. So you'd have to only use (dual-link) DVI, DisplayPort, or a combination of those to have 144hz on both monitors.
