For the past several years I've been on a Macbook Pro and PS4. I really missed having the power of a gaming rig and the flexibility to download any title I choose and not just games available for Mac. It feels so good to remove the "OS X" tag from my Steam filter!

The other use for my PC will be to run Linux VMs and Docker containers for personal software projects such as side work scientific software and hobbyist video games.

I spent about 2 weeks of research before I purchased the parts. I decided an i5 was more than I needed. I had a tough time deciding between the 1070 and the RX 480. In the end I wanted more GPU and preferred Nvidia.

The parts were ordered from Amazon and Newegg due to shipping savings and some Amazon promotions I could redeem. I must say the build itself could not have gone more smoothly. From unboxing, assembling and installing the OS I did not run into a single hiccup.

  • AF120 Red LED 120mm fans x 4 - These were a last minute addition but I'm glad I got them. My desk sits in our dining room and main living area so aesthetics are important. My fiance is an artist and she really dug that I spent so much time making it look nice. I also plan to get some red-sleeved cables but I had reached my self-imposed budget.

I have been using it for about a week and it has been just a night and day difference. Even low requirement games ran pretty stuttered on my Iris graphics MBPro. Every game I've thrown at my rig runs like a knife through hot butter. Rust runs at 100FPS, Overwatch, Pillars of Eternity, Civ and some others. Granted I'm not really pushing the limits yet but I am overjoyed with this build.

I threw in a vintage photo of the order page of my last rig from back in 2003. Hope you enjoy!

Part Reviews

I'm not interested in overclocking and this is more than I need for my purposes.

Very good motherboard. I had a hard time finding something under $100 on the new Kaby Lake chipset but I am very happy with this board.

I figured I would be dual booting Linux on here as well as running some virtual machines so 16GB is about right. The Ripjaws look amazing too!

Nice size for the price. I can't complain. It's working as advertised.

Video Card

What can I say? Everyone knows this is a great card and it is. I love the light on the side for glass walled cases!

I nearly got the smaller air model but was worried about fitting the 1070. I am very satisfied with the 350D. The side compartment for hiding cables works perfectly. I had to buy a fan splitter so I was able to hide that in there as well.

What games have you been playing? If you play gta 5, csgo, or battlefield 1, could you please tell me what fps you are getting? I'm looking to build a similar pc for my birthday. Thanks.

Looks like you're in Hawaii judging by the background of some pictures besides the fact, nice build. Thinking of getting the same mobo

I haven't checked on this in a while and just saw your reply. Actually, it's North San Diego county, Rancho Santa Fe. Thanks. Mobo is awesome btw.

Thanks for this tip. My case came with a covered version. I ordered and installed the airflow intake kit and it looks much better!

Do the red LED fans bleed through if you have the front panel on?

anticucho submitter 1 Build 1 point 24 months ago

Hmm I'll check. I bought the mesh panel from Corsair's website. Let me get back to you. Sorry for the late response!
