Description

Here's hoping to my Mrs not finding out the budget of this build :P

This all started out on a whimsical purchase of a prebuilt HP Envy desktop. Right on the spot I decided to upgrade the included GTX960 with an EVGA SC 980ti. Not long after that and several game crashes later I had to change to PSU to a larger one to accommodate the GPU. It was then that I thought I might as well start with a build from the ground up.

Took about 4 months to research, order and ship the parts (including several shipping mishaps - such is the fate of one living in an emerging market country). One Saturday I spent a good six hours completing the build and enjoyed every minute of it. Most of it spent on cable management and I still couldn't get it nearly as good as some of the other Phatenks Evolv builds on this website. Kudos to those guys who have really mastered the art of cable management.

Overall I kept the theme to a subtle stealth grey/metal and white with minimal RGB since I don't like too much lights or color in my workstation (thus my selection of Daskeyboard and Logitech MX Master wireless mouse rather than RGB gaming keyboard and mouse).

Using this setup mainly for productivity, light photo editing and light gaming. Definite overkill for what I do but hey the fun is actually in building a machine you know can gobble up most of stuff you throw at it.

Wish list for further improvements in the future:

(1) Another X34 monitor to put on top of the current one, (2) A nice DAC and amplifier setup, (3) Definitely need to improve the PC and desk cable management but figured I'll wait till I'm done with adding components to this setup, (4) Need to change the green light on the SLI bridge to white

Won't be doing any parts review since all of the parts used have already been extensively reviewed and covered by other users on this forum. Many thanks for the inspirations and input I got from all your builds.

light gaming

GeForce GTX 1080 (x2)

Yup, seems legit

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 5 points 30 months ago

Haha yes but I've only played Tomb Raider so far. Previously a console gamer and couldn't even find the time. As mentioned it is an overkill for the need/use but just wanted to have fun doing the build and testing it to see how far I could get this to go.

Matthewtina2015 2 Builds 10 points 30 months ago

Yup

have fun

$4218.47

That's some expensive fun

:P JK

GospoGospo 8 Builds 11 points 30 months ago

It's not that bad... say OP gets 2 hours a day for the next 5 years, or 3650 hours. Only $1.15 an hour, less than going to the movies.

Trav_X 13 points 30 months ago

When you put it THAT way, maybe I should raise my budget

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 10 points 30 months ago

Permission to use this defense when all hell break loose hahaha

Matthewtina2015 2 Builds 5 points 30 months ago

Wow. Nice math

Doublebow 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

$4218.47? is that US dollars for the whole build?

Matthewtina2015 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Yes

Doublebow 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

wow, in the UK his build would cost nearly £4000 so like $5000, damn we get ripped off here.

Jayjakejim5718 1 point 30 months ago

You should download some games bro

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Already am mate hahaha. Close to 20% on my SSD just from steam library. Too fun a machine not to play games now :)

Chu4Lyfe 3 points 30 months ago

Course its light gaming, those aren't the OC versions obviously lol

Matthewtina2015 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Lol nice

vuyomakoni 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

"Here's hoping to my Mrs not finding out the budget of this build :P"

Oops! It's online now. (IGNORANCE IS) THIS

I know it's a joke. Super nice build. Now just build it's clone for your wife.

Thumbs up.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 8 points 30 months ago

She's a MacBook user but other than that she's perfect hahaha

GospoGospo 8 Builds 8 points 30 months ago

So in reality it's you that should be upset about her wasting money... :)

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 10 points 30 months ago

Haha one should know when to pick his battles :P Some are just better left well alone

montiago 1 Build 3 points 30 months ago

This man gets it. Take notes, men.

eopest 9 Builds 4 points 30 months ago

If she's happy it wasn't a waste of money. :)

Enrico411 2 points 30 months ago

very clean and powerfull build!

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Thanks! Appreciate it.

Jaime.g 2 points 30 months ago

I like this build man it's great. When I get the funds I'm going to work on my own. Here take a look: https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/DqQzK8/the-game-extremest

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

I'm awed.. still trying to understand what's all that HDDs for. But looking forward to your actually completing the build and sharing it with all of us. Good luck!

Jaime.g 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks... and its for a big project of mine I have planned out involving a whole lot of AI.

Jaime.g 2 points 30 months ago

Hopes it get featured when I get this thing built, after I get the funds that is

DeltaForceGM01 2 points 30 months ago

why not get a 6800k and overlcock it ?

IAstate97 2 points 28 months ago

He also might have run out of lanes, the 6800 only has 28. 16+8 for the dual 1080's, and 4 for the m.2, and he would have no room for anything else, say, another bigger m.2 if the price goes down in the future. 6800k overclocked is a great option for single video card people, it truly is. But once you go dual, it's safer to err on the side of more lanes, and the extra speed and less voltage to overclock is a nice bonus as well.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

I did consider it but then I read up on reviews and found out that with the 6850K you can OC it with less voltage compared to the 6800K. I haven't gotten around to OC-ing mine yet but guess that consideration was what made me go with the 6850 for the build

CallOfSnowGolem 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

How do you like the cpu cooler? Great Build

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

It's great. I originally had the 115 till I found out that it won't fit the RAM sticks. Was a bit loud at first but with a bit of fan tuning now works flawlessly (and quiet)

APDS 1 point 30 months ago

Wow. Very tastefully done. Very clean. It really changed my feelings about that case. It makes me feel like I took a drink of ice cold sparkling water. It's perfect!

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Thanks. It's a great case and forces one to work hard on cable management. Only wished it had USB 3.1 ports up front

pappashaw 1 point 30 months ago

Clean build, love the color scheme and how well each component complements each other. Too cool!

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Thanks. Picking complementary parts was the fun bit.

Budgeterer 1 point 30 months ago

Powerful build and clean. What if you found out that your Mrs is a moderator on this site and she is planning to featur this build.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Uh oh

issac.mantle 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

FEATURE PLS

Alexius_ 1 point 30 months ago

A true powerhouse.

moo4football 1 point 30 months ago

I give you kudos for putting all of that in a mid tower i would have gone with full tower to avoid as much of a hassle haha.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

It was surprisingly spacious. Never had to work in a full tower before but considering my previous HP was even way smaller haha

marcelmunarolo 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

This is an awesome build! Gratz! I have one question please. Both GTX 1080 are operating at 16x? I am asking it because on the DELUXE II user manual I saw that for PCIE16X_3 (second card) the bandwidth is shared with the M.2. Looks like if you use the M.2, then you will get the PCIE16X_3 working on 8x, is it true?

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Yes that is correct. I had come to the realization of that issue just before the build but read somewhere in the forum here that the graphics wouldn't get affected much and I just soooo love that M.2 :P

marcelmunarolo 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

I love it too :P Thanks for the clarification! Have fun! Cheers!

ReThorb_ 1 point 30 months ago

What's the desk?

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Walnut U table (2m) from Ethnicraft (http://ethnicraft.co.id/page/ethnicraft)

ReThorb_ 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks man

Lewhan 1 point 30 months ago

whats that chair mate? lol Nice rig. very clean :)

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Herman Miller Aeron Ergonomic Chair

AnthonyTaylor1555 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

I have one of those chairs too, and they are fantastic. Plenty of support, very comfortable, and they are mesh, so you don't get sweaty on contact. My Dad has used one at work for over 10 years. I'd highly recommend them.

OCFEIND 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Lol love the first line, you know that's impossible though might want to do something nice for her and break the news easily. Better to have one night in the dog house then many. Anyways I can tell you from experience I just upgraded from a 980 ti to Sli 1080 strix and the performance for gaming is insane I run witcher 3 in 4k at 60 fps steady and with tons of mods for enhanced detail, there isn't any game yet I've gotten under 60 fps maxed settings in 4k. In short the best gaming experience possible. Also love the white on black +1 all day.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Haha I hear you mate. She's raised her eyebrow when asking about the monitor... have a feeling I'll somehow pay for this come her birthday year end :P

Loving your build as well. Very unique setup and I look forward to testing those games as you mentioned.

OCFEIND 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Thx I haven't uploaded the photos of the two 1080s yet I'm waiting for my decision on either an upgrade to 32 or 64 gigs of ram. Then with the 2 upgrades done I'm going to do a 2.0 version of my build. I can tell from your cpu gpu combo tho yours would be very similar in performance to my build, so I know you'll get amazing 4k 60 fps performance in just about anything. Can't speak for every game but all the big new titles the 2 1080s just dominate.

OCFEIND 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Also if you got any questions on over clocking the 2 gpu's I can give you my numbers. The most beneficial thing for them though is to make a profile off of the oc profile and turn the gpu power limiter from 15 to 20, that makes a big difference then just a little bit more to clock speed I went with around 44 or 56 can't remember which. Also the stock fan profiles suck look them over and do a fan profile that turns them on sooner. Those 3 things together gave me another 5-15 fps average in witcher 3. It was a noticeable difference.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Yep, I've tried overclocking the GPUs using EVGA Precision and changed the power, fan curve etc and yielded stable 2050Ghz on Unigine Heaven and 3Mark Time Spy. Haven't tried it for games though. Looking forward to it.

OCFEIND 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Why are you using evga over clocking software instead of asus?

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

I find it much easier to use than Asus' own GPU Tweak II. I've read online that MSI Afterburner is awesome as well but haven't tried it.

mostafansar 1 point 30 months ago

Very gooood

Zhronox 1 point 30 months ago

Hey Awesome Build. Question I noticed that you're using a Ultra-wide Monitor (correct me if I'm wrong) how do you like it for gaming and what monitor is that?

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

It's the Acer X34 Predator. If you're considering that then per my understanding they'll (or already have in some countries perhaps) be releasing a new generation of this which already comes with a 100mhz refresh rate (mine's still comes with a base refresh rate of 60 and have to change some settings to get it to overclock to 100). Hope this helps.

Zhronox 1 point 30 months ago

ah Perfect thanks a lot. Another Question and sorry for asking so much. Are you using cable extender for you modular PSU or did you buy the entire cable? Thanks for the reply and sorry for the noobish questions.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

No worries. I actually bought complete sets for that Corsair PSU series from Cablemod and Corsair's own sleeved cable set (from Amazon). It was a good thing that I did since a couple of Cablemod's cables were faulty. That way I could still exchange them with the Corsair ones and complete the build rather than having to deal with replacements/exchanges.

BattleDor 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Wow you choose exactly what I would have for my dream PC save for a VEGA gpu as I'm not a huge Nvidia fan. Great cable management and I love the overall look +1

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks. Selection of it basically came that at the point in time of the build it seemed to be the best available option however I do agree with you, if AMD VEGA comes out as advertised it will be quite a beast. Looking forward to your upcoming build.

BattleDor 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

I already built I just didn't have as much cash as you lol but I will probably get a vega gpu when they come out.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Share your build then! That's the fun of this site isn't it? :)

Also despite my budget I find the cleanliness in design and overall thought in selecting/putting components that synergize well more important. Everyone has different budget and different needs/purpose when putting together their build.

BattleDor 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

I've meant to make a completed build for a bit but just havnt gotten around to taking some pics lol

uberlizard 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Nice build, and congrats on getting it featured! those CPU temps are pretty sick, although with a cooler like that, overclock the s*** out of that. I love the cable management, you would not believe the amount of awful cable management there is out there. I really wish I could build one of these, my budget is a little smaller:) .

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks. Considering that actually it was all the other builds here that got me started on my own and to get it featured.. quite the unexpected honor.

Shout out to @ElkinRusinque, he's the real master builder when it comes to cable management. Try as hard as I could I can't come close to his build (https://pcpartpicker.com/b/sMBPxr)

GospoGospo 8 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Nice build! I have a Phanteks* Evolv TG and EVGA P2 waiting for me, just need to decide between x99 and z170. Is that a cablemod kit or something else for the PSU cables?

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Looking forward to your completed build :)

Mine's a hybrid between Cablemods and Corsair sleeved cable kit. It was a stroke of luck that I ordered the extra kit since some of the Cablemods cables were faulty.

GospoGospo 8 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Yeah I was prying into their quality, looks like they are good but I read rumors that PSU vendors won't stand behind use of 3rd party cables. I'll have to ponder some.

Cam84 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Man you adding another computer to tandem off that psu? (Says the guy running one 1070 off an Evga 1000w p2) ;) lol but in my defense I bought mine cause I was going to xfire fury cards but 1070 showed its ugly face and I found a placeholder :) nice build bro! +1000

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Haha yes, I knew it's way over what I need but figured the 860 might be cutting it a bit close to the actual TDP at full load. Figured go the next step up which unfortunately is 1200 :P

acrid56 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Cable management is frankly amazing. I'm loving the whole build, and especially the strix 1080 choice. Simply the best card out there.

Personally think the HD is a bit useless... You'll notice how much you hate the speed pretty soon:P

Overall, definitely worth the feature!

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks! Appreciate the comment and input.

I do agree with your assessment about the HDD but even at the time of designing this build I still had to put some constraint/consideration in there hahaha

Yes, loving the Asus Strix. Great performance and the understated/stealth look fits my build well.

rojamb1234 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

This is one of those builds where I would usually say something about the budget and what you are using it for and complain, but it looks like you were purely going for asthetics here, and it looks like you did it extremely well. Your cable management gave my PSU a heart attack. :D

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks for the pardon :)

I know the budget is not everyone's cup of tea but I personally feel it was worth it. Deep down I'm hurting more from the money spent on that pre-built (crap) HP PC that this build replaces... If I only knew then what I know now

Aesthetics played a part here since this all started as a home improvement project. That corner of the room used to be a wasteland and all sort of junks ended up there. I still keep a pic to remind me and the Mrs of the complete turnaround we did there hahaha.

rojamb1234 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Buyers regret is always a really bad feeling D:. My current computer (GTX 750 ti and a i5 4670) that I got around 2013 I am trying to use for video editing. Since i was quite naive at the time, I didnt really know what components I needed to successfully do what I wanted so im doing a $1000 upgrade.

zieg777 1 point 30 months ago

And here I am hoping to convince the Mrs to let me spend as much as your processor on an entire build.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Haha I didn't ask mine... that's how I got away with it and thus the name of this build

xolot1 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Nice build. What type of cable combs did you use? Which brand? They make a huge difference in the aesthetics!

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Got mine from Cablemod

xolot1 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Right on, thanks!

felohany 1 point 30 months ago

so why 2 ssd

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

The original idea was to keep the M.2 for OS and related components and the secondary SSD for apps like Adobe, Office, Steam, etc.

Reality: some apps that didn't allow the option to choose installation drive gets mixed in with Windows on the M.2 volume. Luckily there wasn't that many app like that.

felohany 1 point 30 months ago

well a 1TB of m.2 is better than a 512GB and another 1Tb

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Yes there is that option but somehow I really wanted to keep my OS, apps and data on separate physical volumes when I designed this.

felohany 1 point 30 months ago

well we all want do so but doesn't really work i like the processor tho

OCFEIND 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

I am curious about the m.2 speed compared to the ssd in actually tests not just specs. Is it noticeable and what do you have running on the m.2 like os? Just wondering for myself I need another storage device because I've almost filled my 850 Evo ssd so I'm considering getting another or going for the m.2 if it's much faster considering the price difference it would have to be at least 30% - 50% faster. Also I hate the look of most m.2 drives especially the placement of them on the Asus deluxe mobo.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Same as above - M.2 as the OS. It's blazing fast however using Samsung's Magic Drive app I only managed to see half the theoretical/advertised speed from the spec sheet. But it is plenty faster than even the 850 Pro. I also used the 850 Evo as my boot drive on my HP so yes if a few seconds (like 2-3 seconds) in boot time then yes you should consider going down the M.2 route.

jelricb 1 point 30 months ago

The only thing I'm wondering is where I can get that chair.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Hi mate, it's the Herman Miller Aeron chair. You can google it and hope it's available near where you live.

jelricb 1 point 30 months ago

Aye, thanks!

Hector1908 9 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Wow , just beautiful . Awesome color match bro .

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks. I like your black and reds too. I just didn't have the guts to do one for myself and went with more neutral colors.

Hector1908 9 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Yeah , mine is nice but yours is just class . I took my blue one apart and gonna sell most of the parts . Will keep Dominator RAM and cpu 5960x but everything else is gonna be new parts . Getting 1080 strix sli and will try to get all in white . I just cat take my eyes of that case Its so compelling lol . I showed my girlfriend and told her I'm gonna build her pc for work and she loved it . Where does the blue light coming from , is it motherboard or blue fans ? Do you mind to explain?

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks. Great to have one's work appreciated. The lights are set to white actually but because of the tinted tempered glass they show up blueish in the pics. I kept them to a minimum and mainly from the three corsair fans (AF LED series), the two GPUs (static white) and breathing white LED from the motherboard. Hope this helps

My last bit of homework is trying to figure out how to change that green stripe on the SLI bridge to white

Hector1908 9 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Great , thanks . That's NVidia hybrid sli bridge right .

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Nvidia High Bandwidth SLI bridge, yes.

eopest 9 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Dude, you need to give us an address to send the "Get Well!" cards to for when the wife finds out... :)

Seriously though, I like it. Just enough overkill. And your cable management fu is if not awesome, better than a lot I've seen here lately.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

The least you could've done is send PC games. What am I supposed to do with flowers while stuck in a hospital hahaha... Thanks for the positive comments. Appreciate it.

No problem. (I was figuring on at least 1 broken arm, that's why the cards.) :)

Wow that is a beautiful PC. A bit pricey for what your gonna use for, but what the hell.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

dawzy11 1 point 30 months ago

So awesome dude, such a great case.

I will be buying the same soon!

How do you like the monitor?

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

It's great. Am trying to figure out how I can get IT to shell out a 34" monitor for my work as well :P

eopest 9 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Well, when I was IT, I'd tell them that dual monitors = 2x the work expected. Be careful what you ask for...

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

I should get my IT to copy that mindset hahaha

SamDaPwner 1 point 30 months ago

Off topic, but how's that aeron? Thinking about getting one

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Highly recommended. Been using one at work for 9 years.

SamDaPwner 1 point 30 months ago

did you buy it used?

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

New. Haven't run across any used chair market where I live yet haha. Closest thing I came across was being offered older model with 2-3 years left in their warranty.

SamDaPwner 1 point 30 months ago

Alright. I'm getting a fully loaded one used foe 400 CAD... think it's a great deal.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Go for it. I love this chair and I'm sure you'll like it too :)

Yahtadi 1 point 30 months ago

What chair are you using? xD

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

I should seriously consider switching career and sell this chair :) :)

Herman Miller Aeron Chair http://www.hermanmiller.com/products/seating/performance-work-chairs/aeron-chairs.html

Yahtadi 1 point 30 months ago

So that chair couldnt handle your next career? You need rethink your life decision mate :))

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

If I had known how many people would be interested in this chair I could've made another build selling that chair hahaha. But in all honesty a great chair. I used to have back pains from crappy office chair at work. Mrs bought this for me and problem solved.

Yahtadi 1 point 30 months ago

Keep her! Shes a keeper. Did you see that? Alright alright, where is the door? Ill let myself out

Mattyap 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Holy crap sick build! I love how clean you've made it.

Songster 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Well done indeed. +1

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks

AnAngrySamaritan 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Aesthetically, you get my up vote. IT'S SO PRETTY! But I wonder why you went with 2 1080's when you're only gaming on a 1440p monitor. I mean 2 1070's in SLI will go a long way and not to mention $400 cheaper... But I digress, what you do with your money is your business and who am I complain to what is probably +100fps in GTA5 Max Settings at 1440p!

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Spot on! I did ponder that very issue when designing this build since I already had the 34' acer and I loved it so much I didn't want to part with it just yet. But then again the point of overkill is to have room/flexibility down the road. That's why possible future plan might be to add another acer 34' and game on both screens ;)

eopest 9 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Dual 34" monitors? You wound me..

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

I'll send you a get well card :) :)

AnAngrySamaritan 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

SUPER Looking forward to updates then! Maybe, you'll update to possibly 3 screens at 1080p because I imagine the line down the middle where the screens meet in a dual curved monitor display would be quite annoying for me; Three Screens and it's like you're in an actual cockpit in Star Citizen or work on one monitor, game on another, and catch the latest news in the third. The skies the limit! I plan to use my current VG248qe as a data or chat reader down the road while I work, stream or game on some Curved Ultra-wide G-Sync enabled beast! The future is bright.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Haha the plan I have is for dual vertical ultrawide. Already have the mounting bracket for that actually. My desk is capped in real estate so I'll have to go vertical to add screens if we're staying on ultrawide format. But yes, basically I had the same idea in mind - either game on one screen while keeping other things open on the top monitor, or have the flexibility to game on both screens though I doubt I'll like it.

What are you using for audio? I've been thinking of upgrading mine. Are you using a sub or just the two monitors?

Nice build, solid component choice if more than you need but hey its not about need its about want isn't it :)

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

So far just the two monitors from Audio Engine. It's powerful enough for what I need without the subwoofer. Am thinking of adding a nice DAC and amplifier that can cater for a nice headphone as well. What are you considering upgrading to?

Want will always > Need hahaha. You got that on point :)

Design1stcode2nd 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

I have a basic Klipsch 2.1 system and it does alright but I'm sure it could be a lot better. I haven't really started looking into it yet so I'm open to whatever. A lot of people seem to use headphones but I need to be able to hear what's going on in the house so monitors are my only option.

OP, you forgot the SLI bridge.

?Huh?

DylonAE 1 point 30 months ago

Looks great buddy! I'm building right away here and I have the same video card and case. Could use some advice though. Where did you get your cables amd what we're your lengths? I want it to look good from both sides so I'm avoiding cable extensions. I'm leaning towards cablemod...

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

I used both cablemod and corsair sleeved cables (on account of some of the cablemod PCIE cables were faulty). I didn't order custom lengths so unfortunately as you could see on the pic showing the back of the case the basement next to the PSU just became a mess of cables... Maybe I'll get around to working on custom length cables someday... maybe

Good luck with your build! :)

DZSlash 1 point 30 months ago

Thank you for posting your build. I leveraged your layout when putting together my own build.

With your case fans, was there enough cable to route them to the fan controller from the front of the case? I am looking at the getting the new ML series fans as I am currently also have this case and want to make sure that the fan cable can reach.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Yes you'll have no trouble at all. Just make sure you orient the fans so that the cable point is closest to the side of the case where you need to route the cables to the fan controller hub. I managed to get them all quite cleanly tracing the frames of the case rather than having to cut a path across. Good luck with your build.

DZSlash 1 point 30 months ago

Thank you. I really appreciate the reply.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Anytime mate. Looking forward to your build.

2Bored4U 1 point 30 months ago

From what I'm told there's a little switch on the bottom or top of the sli bridge that lets you alternate between different colors. Hope this helps.

Flossyahova 1 Build 1 point 29 months ago

Oh wow amazing build ! Could you tell me how you did to fit the Samsung pro sata cables throught the back of your case? For me the phanteks fan seems to be blocking it :/

+1

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 29 months ago

Quite easy actually - you just need to route the SATA cables to the HDD bay that is vacant at the basement. I'm planning to change to 3 x 120 fan config sometime down the road but seeing other builds here it seems to be doable to still route the SATA cable this way.

Flossyahova 1 Build 1 point 29 months ago

"(1) Another X34 monitor to put on top of the current one"

Aww yeah. :)

I'm in the same boat - cheers to them not finding out what the budget... turned out to be. ;)

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 29 months ago

Hahaha I'm being a good boy and lay low before I spring for that new monitor. She'll definitely notice that! Figured might as well wait and see how the upcoming X34p fares.

Knightguardian3 1 point 29 months ago

I need help I got a phantom 240 nzxt can't mount a x31 raidiater on top of it on top this one did it in a small case how is it possible please help

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 29 months ago

? I have no experience with that case but most compatibility check between that case and radiator come out ok so you should have no problem installing it? Hope you can sort it out. Good luck

CrimzonSlayeRx 1 point 29 months ago

I love how this setup screams "ADULT!!!", "MATURE!!!", "OFFICE!!!", yet underneath is a BEAST gaming setup. Love the build, and most especially the setup. 10/10

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 29 months ago

Thanks! Appreciate it :)

Cr1ms0n 1 point 29 months ago

Oh, the irony of this build name. You obviously are not ignorant of anything in this build, other than a monitor. However, I can forgive that, considering that the build looks sick.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 29 months ago

Well I know the 1440p monitor isn't suited for the GPU build but I just can't help it hahaha. I looove the 21:9 aspect ratio and pixel real estate for work stuffs. Maybe if they release 4K in different format someday...

DayQuil_Man 1 point 29 months ago

Hey man, sweet build +1.

Hope this isn't late, but what are your thoughts on that m.2? I'm looking to get the same board and m.2 ssd and was wondering if you had any problems so far with either of the items?

The reason I'm asking id because I heard some people were having problems regarding the m.2 on that board.

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 29 months ago

Oh? Am not aware that there have been problems with that combo? Mine's working flawlessly and I love it. If you're considering it then why not even wait till the 960Pro becomes available? I think it should come out soon. It'll be even faster and comes with larger size should that appeal to your need better. Good luck with your build!

DayQuil_Man 1 point 29 months ago

Thanks for the reply, I'm glad to know everything worked out :) Just curious, what are your boot times?

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 2 points 29 months ago

Now that you asked... did a test. Nothing too crazy - 47 seconds from power on till login prompt. I had the impression that my previous boot time on skylake with 850 evo was somewhat faster though I never really timed it.

DayQuil_Man 1 point 29 months ago

Yea, I've been hearing that boot times are longer on X99 platforms, I think it has something to do with memory testing.

SpamBuff 1 point 28 months ago

Building on that same mobo and gonna sli but its not gonna be here for a week, what size sli bridge did you get

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 28 months ago

3 slot. Good luck with your build.

dipplestix 1 point 28 months ago

What wasn't fitting when you had the h115? I have this mb, case, and ram with a 115 atm (but haven't built yet).

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 28 months ago

The Ram stick will not have sufficient clearance against the radiator/fan setup. If you want to keep the H115 then you would have to change to a shorter Ram stick (Dominator Platinum is roughly 55mm tall) or like me change to smaller/slimmer radiator. Good luck with your build!

dipplestix 1 point 28 months ago

Going to follow your example and just change to the smaller radiator, build specs here (pictures soon): http://pcpartpicker.com/list/

Thanks for your advice

IAstate97 1 point 28 months ago

Why did you get such big expensive ram sticks? I get that you want the speed of the 3333, but the 6850 only supports up to 2400 ram speed, so it's kinda wasted space with the extra size needed to disperse the extra heat of the higher performance

Also, you got double the power you needed in that power box, even with massive overclocking an 850 or 900 watt would be good, and actually be more efficient

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 28 months ago

Yes and no I suppose - 6850K supports up to 2400MHz but the motherboard supports up to 3466MHz. When it comes to overclocking there can be some success or failure so yes in that regard the advertised speed might or might not be achieved but doesn't mean the ram speed is restricted to 2400MHz as it depends on the motherboard of choice (and OC luck).

As for the PSU the 860W wasn't in stock at the time so it was either downgrade or upgrade. Took the upgrade route as it was in stock at the time.

IAstate97 1 point 28 months ago

That's a heck of an upgrade haha, there's usually someplace with a 900 watt in stock, but I agreee going up was better than going down, and you could save that power box for the next build and use some massive graphics card/cards and do extreme overclocking and still have plenty of headroom

jbae13 1 point 27 months ago

Hot

KingWalrus.8th 1 point 25 months ago

Ok, BTW great build, nice setup. But are you just really rich? Like for my PC(i7-7700K,1080,32Tri-3200) its because I play extensive games. But if you are only doing "light gaming and photo editing" why the hell would you buy this beast?

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 25 months ago

I think by "light" it was mostly about the time i could afford spending on games. Dont worry, didnt build this to play minesweeper haha. Been playing graphic intensive games as well but not too often unfortunately what between work and family time. But first and foremost i guess i just liked building the rig. Am still working to improve the cabling, fans etc.

Guess this is like when guys have a vintage sports car that's not a daily driver but he keeps it in the garage just so he can have something to tinker around with. Thats the best analogy i could come up with.

IcedDog 1 Build 1 point 24 months ago

Really nice, classy looking build! Very clean cable management...did you put a sleeve on the front panel wires?

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 24 months ago

No, haven't tried doing my own cable sleeving so the front panel cables are all standard.

luca2 1 point 24 months ago

hey, I have a question regarding the fans. On the Phanteks website, they display 2 140mm fans placed in the front. However, I've seen numerous builds of this case with 3 120mm fans in the front. Do 3 120mm fans fit properly and is it just personal preference between placing2 140mm fans or 3 120mm fans in the front area?

Vreaker12 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 24 months ago

The case comes standard with 3 140mm fans included. The case accommodates either 3x120mm or 2x140mm fans both up top or in front. As to which size one wishes to use I guess that's completely up to user preference in terms of budget, aesthetics, how particular you are about the volume of air the fans move (mathematically 3x120mm fans move more air than 2x140mm fans but of course the max speed of fans matter).

I originally have 2 Corsair AF140 in this first build but in the next revision changed it to 3 Corsair ML120 up front. Hope this answers your question.
