This build is something i've been poking at, changing and messing around with for the past 12 months, first purchased with my Tax dollars as a much smaller system. Original Specs:
ASRock H97m Pro4
8GB of Hyper X RAM (Still In current Rig)
120GB 840 EVO (Still In current Rig)
WD Green 500GB (Still In current Rig, Now as a video backup drive)
MSI Twin Frozr R9 280x
Thermaltake R21 Urban
So I've changed a lot. Not all at once, that's for sure, just minor changes when i've had the money to do so. First things I added were an Aftermarket Air Cooler (A Thermaltake Nic F3 or something, It was the only thing i could find that'd fit in the case) and some extra case fans.
Then, I was still unhappy with the case, due to poor airflow and cable management (This case in particular has left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth when it comes to Thermaltake, I'm sure they make some useable stuff, but this thing was cheap, nasty, and didn't offer a lot at all. I Wouldn't recommend it to a new builder, no matter what the budget.) So I changed that over to a Coolermaster N500, Which was an absolutely Beautiful case, If it weren't for my bug I'd still be in it, but my girlfriend took it off of my hands when I mentioned I wanted to upgrade to my next case (More on that later). Now, The N500 is fantastic! From what I've seen on the Tube, The whole N series seems to be an awesome, competitively priced range of cases for any build, and this one offered something that i'd been looking for when I made the Case upgrade: Cable Routing behind the motherboard! This seems a must to me now, I don't know why but it just ruins a build for me if you can't manage cables well.
Next, the H100. I had a friend upgrade to X99, and with it, installed a custom loop. He literally gave the Cooler To me, for nothing. Best guy out!
Later, I added the next set of RAM, and My girlfriend bought be the 250GB SSD for Christmas.
After Christmas, I started Running into GPU problems. Regular driver crashes, BSOD's etc, so I RMA'd the card to the supplier, and they couldn't return it fixed, as MSI here in Aus had stopped shipping this card. So they gave me store credit, Next thing you know I've bought the 970.
Following that, I started helping my Girlfriend put together Her rig, which included a few bits and Pieces from the order that came with the 970 (RAM for her, as well as 2 1TB Barracuda's, one for each of us), So that's where the latest storage came from. Also ordered my Current power supply, and she took mine.
Next the Newest Case, The H440. Man, this thing is just gorgeous. I've had a few problems with it, I won't lie, but NZXT have graciously sent me out replacement parts for anything not working as intended, so a big thanks to them! Anyway, such a joy to build in, spacious, without needing a full tower. Manages cables so well, It really makes it easy.
Finally, the latest Update is the 4690k and the new Z97 Motherboard, which have only been in the system for about 4 weeks now. Was probably an unnecessary upgrade, however to justify it, I did sell the old gear, which basically covered the entire cost of the new CPU.
Into the future, I'm thinking of adding another 970 or pushing up to a 980ti (Maybe in April when we go to the US for a holiday), and then possibly water cooling the whole lot. May also try to track down another 250GB 840 EVO to run a RAID 0, as well as a 500GB M.2 SSD, and possibly remove all Mechanical storage from my rig. Maybe.
Thanks for reading this long winded Post!
EDIT: Today, the 27th July, 2015, I've added in my new CPU cooler, the Swiftech H220x! I'll be looking at grabbing a GPU block to go with it, as the H220x allows you to add that in, so this baby could be water cooled very soon!
