Valentine Punk

Saw this case and loved it. My cousin wanted a budget gaming rig for him and his girlfriend (yup she games - lucky guy). She is totally also into the whole anime and steam punk thing... Got this done just in time for Valentines and so here we are:

Went the AMD route because we were on a budget. Originally the budget was $550... Problem with Intel, is that the mATX sized mobo was more also and if we were going to go with Intel, we would go big all the way and get the MSI Gene Maximus mATX. So, having to expand the budget on not just the CPU but also the mobo was a bit much. We could have gone with a different case, but this one was just perfect for the look we were going for.

The only thing different than what is listed is the PSU - Keeping to a budget and going for a look and finding a full modular kit... not so much choices left to us... So, Raidmax 635 bronze. full modular and with warranty from Newegg. Yes, I did cringe, but we are keeping an eye on it and so far so good. Pictured, we have a different G.Skill set, but we did go with the red one as listed = 2133 Cas 9 vs the blue at 2133 Cas 10

Note: if you go with this case = small hands (lacking that... ->), lots of patience, and lots of zip ties. Also go with a modular PSU to help with the space.

Part Reviews

CPU Cooler

Very quiet. Huge. Looks great. Cools well.

Best AMD can offer for this size...

2133mhz and CAS 9!!! 'nuff said

Fast boot - I have the OS loaded on this as well my current pick of games

Video Card

The R9 270X 4GB, I've really liked, and with the case and mobo only having the space to hold 1 full GPU, this one fit our budget and has a lot of bang for it's buck. I've been able to play Sniper 3 Elite on Ultra, Alien Isolation on Ultra (though you can really hear the GPU working for this one, but it handled it) This is what I did the most research on. For the price-point, it seems like this has the best bang for your buck.

This case looks great. It is also well thought out on the arrangement. It is really tight, but that is what should have been expected when getting this size case.

Optical Drive

Its a great drive and has been doing well so far. But I think with any drive like this you will need some codecs to get all its features going... anyone have any suggestions and help on this would be much appreciated

Looks good. My only notation is on your operating system. I wonder why, now with Windows 8.1 and classic shell, you stick your nose up at Windows 8? I had the same opinion as 8 first came out, and finally made the switch when I learned about classic shell. Once I got to trying it though, I didn't even end up using classic shell and eventually came to like most of the changes between 7 and 8. If you haven't spent a significant amount of time with 8, I recommend it with classic shell. Windows 10 looks like it'll be a happy medium, so I recommend at least getting to know 8, so that you'll have an easier time adjusting to 10, if you even plan on looking into that at all.

Hardware wise, I only wonder what RAM you actually went with, because the one you have listed is clocked over what your motherboard says it can handle. Did you go with an 1866 or 1600 set?

Sorry about the rant. Nice build though!

no prob. I went with an 1866. Yeah it is more than the mobo is supposed to handle, but I am hoping that AMD comes out with a better mATX one soon and i can do an upgrade. Newegg had the ram on sale, same price as a 1600 so why not?

I have my work desktop on a Windows 8. It isn't too bad, but I think familiarity with 7 just wins out for me right now. I am pretty interested to see what will happen with 10

Thank you for the feedback; I didn't think of it as a rant.

Yeah, I'd have taken the 1866 too being the same price as 1600. Nice find. Interesting that you've got your work desktop on a pc and not the other way around. All the offices and business I've dealt with refuse 8 and stick with 7 lol.

i know... it is pretty funny that way. it's a private company so they probably got a better deal with the 8

What cables are the fans in the case? Are they both 3 pin or 4 pin or are they different?

SLVRWLFX submitter 3 Builds 1 point 46 months ago

It has been awhile since I built this for my cousin. I want to say 3 pin but I am not absolutely sure.

MSI Gene Maximus

SLVRWLFX submitter 3 Builds 1 point 46 months ago

I wish. The MSI Gene Maximus was my first choice of motherboards, but I had an AMD processor. Going with the Maximus and an Intel was over my budget.

MetaApex 1 point 45 months ago

It was a joke, there is no MSI Gene Maximus

SLVRWLFX submitter 3 Builds 1 point 44 months ago

I read your remark as just GENE Maximus. I didn't really pay attention the the MSI part of the comment

What fps do you very on the games. You said the quality but not the fps

SLVRWLFX submitter 3 Builds 1 point 44 months ago

I don't do very much intense gaming, but was able to easily do the 60fps on League of Legends. My cousin now has the build and seems happy enough with what he is doing with it
