Welcome Aboard Phil Coffman!

philip

Oct. 10, 2014

I'm pleased to announce that Phil Coffman has joined PCPartPicker as Design Lead, focusing on all things involving graphic design, user interface, and user experience. Formerly the VP of Design at Spacecraft and Creative Director / Co-founder of Element, Phil brings a wealth of design and UI/UX experience to the team. You can see an idea of his work on his site and on Dribbble.

We're extremely excited to have Phil on board, and I can't wait for everyone to see what he is capable of. Please join us in welcoming him to PCPartPicker!

Thank you for the warm welcome, I'm excited to be part of the team! I'm already at work on several things which should make PCPartPicker even better.

Welcome Phil

Now make custom part entries sortable and filter properly. cracks the whip

Methinks you don't know what UX designers do....

  • -2 points

Yes, because that isn't part of the "User Experience" at all...

Oh wait...

  • 3 points

What you're thinking of is content development. That's functional, and has nothing to do with flow maps or UX improvement. Talk to Ryan or the old Phil for a new feature. (sorry, don't know his last name off the top of my head - Old Phil and New Phil they must be)

  • 3 points

I like to think of UX as the entire experience of the site, everything you see and interact with and that experience should be excellent and feel effortless. That's a goal we'll always be pushing for. I'm looking at each part of this site to figure out what needs to be tuned and making adjustments where necessary. It's going to be fun!

And while you're at it, add the NZXT Grid+ to the library.

Phil, your first job is to make the Export/Markup button and process more transparent for new users.

Your second job is to implement a system that drops in part pictures from Google Image Search or your own database when the vendor doesn't supply a suitable pic to go with their part listing.

  • 11 points

You're third job should you choose to accept it is to make sure you enjoy yourself and always feel free to pop onto forums to bounce ideas off people.

  • 9 points

I have a lot of jobs to do and I'm taking it all in and yes, definitely enjoying myself in the process. :) I've worked on a lot of projects and with different people and communities. It's always refreshing to be part of one where members play an active part in making it better.

Those are feature requests, not design changes

They are features that would improve/change the design of the site.

Figured this would be a good place to throw this out there: Can you add microcenter cpu+mobo combos to this site? I frequent a pc forum that helps first timers put together pc builds using this website, and no one ever knows about microcenter's deals. Would be awesome if those could be added here. Thanks!

And welcome Phil!

Ask in the Forum under Feature Requests, here it will be forgotten.

I extend my welcome to you, Phil. As a fellow designer of the internets, I look forward to your excellent (and it is quite excellent, much better than what I can do) web design philosophy being applied to this website. I hope you give it a makeover. It looks tacky and early web 2.0-ish right now.

  • 1 point

I kind of like the design a bit, I don't want the part lists design to be changed all that much, I don't want them to load any slower, especially when you change the sort.

  • 3 points

Making sure that what makes PCPP so great stays great (design, speed, etc) is very important to me. That's a major focus of mine.

  • 1 point

Looking at his stuff, he'd probably just make it look cleaner. Nobody wants a website like this to be slower. That's just ridiculous.

A couple of small things that could make the site better (to the staff in general, not just you; oh and welcome):

Add price rises on parts (kind of like how there are price drops)

Make sure all parts have pictures to them

PCPartPicker App confirmed? Android First

  • 3 points

A native app is a ways off. We went after the mobile version of the site first, and will likely continue to iterate on that before we go native.

  • 1 point

The mobile browser version works fine. I don't think an app would be much better honestly. Maybe faster depending.

Welcome aboard Phil! Have fun, and happy designing/content-ing/flow-ing (and any other verb I can put an 'ing' on)?

lol. I looked into SpaceCraft and they have a well designed site so I am hoping you can spruce things up around here. Olive branch there, splash of paint here, and maybe a touch of warmth under there. Voila, c'est magnifique!

Welcome Phil!

Your site has a nice clean design, and your photo collection says you have a good eye for symmetry, perspective, framing and proportion, use of space, and interesting lines. I hope everything goes well in your new position, and I think you can be really good for PCP.

Are you sure that it's not just the phone unloading the page when it's not in perspective and then reloading the page when it comes back in. It might be doing this to save on system memory.
