How long do games use Direct X versions for?

An odd question but I'm about to splash some cash on a new gaming rig.

So with this in mind does anyone have any idea what the turn over is usually for Direct X compatibility?

Or put another way, how long might it be before Direct X 12 hardware is no longer supported by games?

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure what the exact numbers were for the previous gens but it's actually a pretty long time usually. Roughly 5-6 years? It all depends on the game obviously, but most games haven't fully swapped over to DX12 yet so I'd say it has a pretty long life ahead of it. Even then, once DX 13 is out most games will have compatibility for 12, much like how most games nowadays have a DX11 mode even if they were built with DX12.

DirectX build off of each other. So a GPU can run DirectX 12 but also 11,10,9. The game itself cannot run DirectX 11/12 if it was built on Direct 9,10, etc. Hope that makes sense.
