Installing first video card this weekend in a system currently running Onbaord graphics on a 6700k cpu. A lot of how-to vids explain disabling graphics where there is an existing discrete GPU. But if using onboard is this still needed? Sounds risky like would lose video output all together if there is an issue with new card.

Its not required. Just plug your monitor into the GPU and NOT the motherboard ports.
