Same size displays for dual monitor setup?

I continually am recommended displays of the same size when asking about monitors for my build, is this really necessary?

It's primarily for aesthetics. If you split a window across two monitors of different sizes (especially with different pixel densities), you can get some weird scaling effects.

Identical monitors is nice, but is not necessary. (For example, if you want one high-refresh-rate display for gaming, and another with better color quality for productivity, you might be unable to get two that are identical in all other aspects while meeting the needs of your budget.)
