If you were stuck...

If you were dropped on a random island, and could only take 2 things with you, what would you take? You have to survive a week, and you get a prize of 10,000 dollars. Remember, islands don't have electricity; count doesn't include clothes. You can bring anything that can be carried easily or fit in a backpack.

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

On top of what gorkti200 said, which is very true, the U.S. was founded for a reason, and that was freedom of religion. If you are from here, then you have that freedom.

Are you sure about that??

  • 2 points

Yes I am sure what you said is true, and yes I am sure the country was partially founded for that reason. It also had something to do with taxes and being overly controlled, but there wouldn't have even been the people here without the want for freedom of religion. Read documents from the founding of the U.S., and a lot of them will mention God in some way.

As you did not specify the backpack, I took the liberty of assuming you meant a hiking backpack, as would be appropriate for such a trip. There are backpacks out there that would fit him.

dropped on a random island

I'm going to assume you're restricting it to islands that offer "reasonable" odds of survival. (For example, you're not dropping someone on a tiny island that's completely submerged half the time, or into an erupting volcano on an island.)

You have to survive a week

Surviving a week in general isn't that bad (depending on the conditions of the "random" island). Thriving is more challenging, but surviving knowing that you'll be out after a week is not hard. You could survive that long without food, though I wouldn't recommend it. (I'm not convinced I'd go that far for $10K.)

A larger backpack has an internal volume on the order of 60L. This is more than sufficient for enough clean drinking water for the week, if rationed reasonably well. The lack of a rigorous definition of a "thing" leaves it open to interpretation, so I'll just add 7 days worth of food (you don't "need" as much as you might think to maintain adequate health). If containers count as things, prioritize the water container and water. If each water molecule is counted as a "thing," I'm out.

count doesn't include clothes.

Well, that makes shelter a bit easier.

A 5 gallon jug of water and a multipurpose tool. Its only one week so food isn't a super high priority and I'm sure I could manage to find at least a little something to eat. Not sure if there is clean water access so I might as well be safe and bring water with me. A multi purpose tool would allow me to do some stuff like build a primitive shelter and would allow me to do stuff so I wouldn't go crazy.

  • 4 points

Ok, after 10 WHOLE MINUTES of thinking, this is it. Fishing rod with bait, and a water filter. I would catch the fish with the rod, and cut it with the hook. For fresh water, I would use the water filter. Using the salt extracted, I would salt my fish meat. (In exchange for cooking) I could surviv for months!

Oh wow someone said the bible now I feel bad :/

  • 1 point

Don't feel bad. You'll catch a lot more fish with a rod than throwing a bible at them.

But, a sharpened cross? That just might work.

A sharpened cross that inexplicably returns to you carrying the fish a la Legend of Zelda boomerangs. I'm down with that.

Each item is separate, except the backpack, which doesn't count.

only two items?

It would have to depend on the island.. But i would have to say a multitool and trusty big lighter.

Good flamethrower and a 5 gallon jug of water.

Harder mode: fire piston and a Sawyer mini or steel pot.

  • 1 point

Pretty easy, water and food. That would be the simplest and safest solution. If you were confident you could forage for one or both, sure bring two books.

  • 1 point

food's not important

water is of a higher priority as you can only last three days without (clean and drinkable) water

you could go three weeks without food

  • 1 point

You could go weeks without food, but would you want to? Starving is not fun, staving to death less so. Especially if you had the option not to starve.

So if we're on that island together are you bringing water and sad puppy dog eyes? Or water and a rock to bash my brain in and take my food?

  • 1 point

puppy dog eyes - no.

rock - no. though there would probably be some on the island though.

I would bring a tent for shelter in order to protect against the elements. (actually, maybe a knife since you are the one who is accusing me of wanting to bash you on the head, and for self-defense)

besides, op said

there wouldn't be anyone else there anyways(hopefully).

so I'm guessing I won't really need that knife,

It was quite a life experience. That being said, it was the Outer Banks of North Carolina for a two-week expedition. Fun stuff. I would not do it again, though.
