I know about the 8(or 4 I forgot) pin power connector on some atx motherboards, my question is do I need that to overclock my ryzen 5 3600x to 4.3 ghz with 1.35 volts
8-pin yes needs to be connected.
If the motherboard has an additional 4-pin that doesn't need to be connected, but also doesn't hurt anything if you have a power supply with both.
follow up question. what is that additional 4, for? Just more power to the system?
AMD specs them a high power draw series and says its unlocked.
Manufacturers build extra headroom into the boards like they do for Intel.
Difference is AMD pushes their products as far as can be safely done at stock clocks, well Intel leaves headroom left to balance power draw.
So it's for show rather then actually needed because AMD used up all the headroom with stock settings.
Its for more power but considering that a single 8 pin EPS is good at least 225W if not a lot more a extra 4 pin is pretty damn pointless outside of extreme overclocking since the CPU will be damaged and have a very short life span if you are pumping that much voltage through it.
