Does Ryzen 5 1600 AF need thermal paste?

I'm a first time builder and just wanted to confirm before I install it, does the ryzen 5 1600 AF require thermal paste or is it already preapplied to the heat sync?

I already bought one and was told before it wouldn't be needed as it comes with it but the packaging and instructions don't mention it either way and I can't tell.

Wanted to ask before I potentially break the cpu. Thanks.

the provided cooler has pre-applied paste

You're using the supplied stock cooler? the paste should be on the cooler (not the CPU). The CPU surface should be clean and shiny. The cooler will have a thin layer of grey-ish glop on it on the CPU mating surface, that's the paste.

There's probably a plastic film protecting the paste on the included cooler, don't forget to take that off before installing.
