Forum Topic "help with picking classes for high school"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 1 point 11 days ago

Your electives will have a minor impact on your chance of getting into a college like CMU or UIUC. By that I mean, which one you take doesn't impact much. However, not taking one will have a slightly negative impact and a mediocre grade more so. I'd prioritize as high a GPA as is possible for you over everything else in core classes, especially math and science.

Forum Topic "help with picking classes for high school"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 2 points 11 days ago

Those two things combined will get you into bigger schools, and if you score high enough, you might even get invitations to the schools.

It's not just scores. Those are essentially a baseline to having your application even read (assuming you don't have any major hooks like URM, 1st gen, extenuating circumstances, etc.). You need to be unique and have something or something that make you stand out. I've known plenty of high stat people (1550/35+, 4.7+) who've gotten rejected from even T20 schools. I'd recommend getting research positions, internships, and interesting experiences you can talk about in your essays. Make an impact somehow.

What is the difference then? We are rapidly, negatively changing the climate with seemingly no end in sight.

Forum Topic "Green New Deal"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

Climate is not the same thing as weather. Climate changes over time sure, but the amount that its changed in a short period is vastly greater and can be correlated to the industrial revolution.

Forum Topic "Green New Deal"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

But in the end we cannot control the climate since it changes all the time (with or without us).

The rate at which the climate is changing is unprecedented and can be directly attributed to a wide-scale change in human behavior. We absolutely can control the climate as seen by how rapidly its changed in the last 100 years.

I used to use an Acura TL, but now it's a 2014 Mustang V6 with sway bars, tires, coils, and some bolt-ons that's owned by an SCCA instructor friend of mine. It isn't the fastest, but I'm having a ton of fun.

You don't need AWD for PA, FWD with good snow tires will be just fine. Get a well running Camry and some good tires.

Which one?

Forum Topic "Car Discussion - Car Modification"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 3 points 1 month ago

I mean, comparing older cars to newer cars the only real difference in terms of interior is maybe head units, but you can still get custom face plates and that sort for newer, non-DIN cars. Also, interior modifications are a really small part of car modifications unless you just care about audio or something.

Forum Topic "If possible, would you move to California?"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 2 points 2 months ago

I was referring to the crime rate which despite being in an area where houses cost 300 to 500 thousand dollars the crime rate was very high especially when it comes to theft. This isn't unique to where i was at either it's basically the case for most "middle class" suburbs in the LA and SD areas.

Ah, I'm not especially sure of that, but it sounds like a bad area. Especially with those house prices.

SF itself is out of the equation, Okaland isn't in silicon valley and i've never been to Oakland. Fremont isn't a bad area like Oakland is ( from what i heard ) so you're most likely right in that regard. Irvine? thats almost as expensive as SF! with average house prices in the millions!

SF is in the equation, it's in OP's post. Oakland may not technically be in the Silicon Valley (which is roughly designated), but it provides easy access to the rest of it. Irvine is quite cheap comparitively. The Median home price is in the high six figures.

Forum Topic "If possible, would you move to California?"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 2 points 2 months ago

Seriously? The only time I was unable to see sunset was during the fires. There has never been smog otherwise. I know my neighbors pretty well and we often do community events and have shared interests. Also, sirens blazing? How urban were you?

Silicon Valley is "rich", but SF is much harder to live in, so I'm not sure about your whole point. Oakland isn't as bad, nor is Fremont. Irvine was way even easier, especially compared to LA.

Forum Topic "If possible, would you move to California?"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 1 point 2 months ago

Uhh, that doesn't happen here? Anti conservative? Maybe, but only if you are an arse hole and shout from the rooftops.

Forum Topic "If possible, would you move to California?"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 1 point 2 months ago

Have you ever actually lived here? None of that seems true to where I've lived (Silicon Valley, Central Valley, and Irvine)

I have yet to hear anyone try to convince me to become vegan besides the occasional advertisement. Those who are vegan here don't proclaim it loudly from the rooftops nor try to convert people. I like eating meat same as anyone and have done so without issue.

What I'm trying to say with the republican statistic is that there are still several Republicans for everyone group of democrats. If you don't live within the Silicon Valley, Republicans have a pretty big presence, even in LA and SD. So I'm not entirely understanding your point about the number of minority or republican voters compared to democratic voters.

Forum Topic "If possible, would you move to California?"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 3 points 2 months ago

What's wrong with other people being vegan? Isn't that their choice? Drug needles are a problem in downtown SF, but that's a tiny part of California. People aren't extremely liberal, in fact, California has more Republicans than every other state besides Texas. Wildfires are a problem in a select number of rural places

Forum Topic "If possible, would you move to California?"

Yep! I love it! I'm in the Silicon Valley and there really is no place like it. Everyone here is in tech or knows about it. Walking past cafes you constantly hear business strategies and startup pitches.

So many opportunities for internships and experiences like no where else. World famous driving roads less than a 5 minute drive from my house. Beautiful ocean views and surfing just an hour away. I love everything about it.

I don't care if other people think I am wrong. Climate change is avoidable? What planet do you live on? That's not rhetorical. If you live on Earth like the rest of us, the climate changes 4 times per year. We call it Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Do you dispute that isn't climate change?

Yes, I absolutely do. That isn't climate. Climate is measured over a long period of time and characterizes the nature of that ecosystem.

The degree of climate change is what bothers people, and the underlying pollution we are doing to the planet. Each and every time you suck in air and breath out carbon dioxide, you're polluting the atmosphere. So are you going to stop breathing because it's a human issue? Goodness, I hope not, but your attitude on the subject is rather hostile.

Climate change is inevitable, sure. But the scale at which it is changing is unprecedented. Breathing isn't an issue, for as far back as humans go discounting the past 200 years, the Earth has maintained a steady amount of variation. Up until recently, it has skyrocketed.

I do not have a main argument. I am not arguing. There is what people believe, and then there is the truth. You don't understand that the truth has no agenda. It either is, or isn't. Nobody here was around 7,000 years ago when the last ice age came to a sudden halt, and the Earth has geological records that say the planet got a massive warming spell. So, how do you think that happened? Maybe every creature on the planet all farted at the same time? Maybe it was something else? Come on, tell me what you think happened when the last major climate change fell upon this world.

To this, I will give you a very informative infographic. https://xkcd.com/1732/. That took many thousands of years to make a small temperature change, much smaller than what has been and will occur.

Look, speculate, fantasize, imagine, guess or whatever, I don't really care. There have been five major extinction level events. Scientists are pretty positive we're at the beginning of another one. Google it. Humans will not be here forever. In my humble opinion, because of knee-jerk radicals such as yourself, I'm kind of happy about that.

What? I haven't seen anything relating to major extinction events besides the obvious ever-present fears like supervolcanos and fault lines. This doesn't mean we should neglect the planted because a supervolcano has been overdue to explode for the past 1000 years.

Humans won't be here forever? Yeah okay, but what have I done to cause that? Because I support efforts to help reduce our CO2 output and generally clean up the planet from what we have done to it? How could that be at all seen as negative or even radical?

Forum Topic "Electric or gas car - which over all has more pollutants"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

That's the problem. We haven't been keeping under control for the past 200 years or so which has led to enormous problems.

Forum Topic "Electric or gas car - which over all has more pollutants"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Climate change is avoidable. Humans have been the caused exponentially higher temperatures just after the industrial revolution. In the grand scheme of things, we are an enormous anomaly. All of our actions are responsible for climate change.

Another one is coming, we won't see it until it's too late, then all of this will be the problem of the next intelligent species of the planet, whoever they may be.

So your main argument is that we shouldn't preserve our planet for the next generation because an asteroid might take us all out? That's like saying I'm never going to buy a house because there is a chance an earthquake will destroy it.

I'm often misunderstood, not for what I say, but for what I don't assume in the mental theater of other human beings. Which is why I answered you. You asked a straight-forward question for clarification, and I was happy to provide it.

/r/iamverysmart. Maybe you think you are misunderstood when you other people don't believe what you are saying is correct.

into mostly harmless CO2 and water, which plants can use to put oxygen back into the air?

Do you understand what global warming is?

Forum Topic "Electric or gas car - which over all has more pollutants"

GentlemanShark 1 Build 0 points 5 months ago

But then, it's pretty pointless. In the last 650,000 years, there have been 7 glacial advances and melt-off. The last Ice Age came to an abrupt end 7,000 years ago. Guess what? There weren't any cars around to blame back then.

Bruh are you trying to say climate change isn't real?

Nope, most trade and technical schools don't have general education requirements. Rather, they have classes suited for your intended major. This means, however, that you do have to go in with a fairly good idea of what you want to study.

Hmm, I wouldn't worry too much about wanting to change your major as most schools will accommodate that. Plus you have typically 2 years to go undecided just filling out GEs where you'll definitely find what interests you. Lots of people go into fields that aren't relevant to their specific major. I've been working through this process myself so if you need any help applying to college, hit me up.
