Comment reply on Oliver's Completed Build: Dad's 50th Birthday Present

Thanks for the confidence in my GPU choice Nikolai. For the PSU I used PC Part Picker's power estimations, and the max power required was still 120 watts below what I got, so I assumed I was safe. The only reason I think I may have undershot the power was not anticipating later expansions such as adding another graphics card, but I highly doubt he'll need that.

Ahh, thanks for the tip! Was looking for a GPU with 4gb of memory, and that was by far the cheapest I found on a brief search, so I believed I was getting a deal!

I'm using custom water cooling for the CPU, and don't have an optical drive. I use an external one when I need.

I think you should choose either one or the other. Either system will work fine if you choose the right product, but it will be a hassle to change once the rig is built and operating.

Don't do anything too outrageous, or else you'll get tired of looking at it after years and years! Keep it cool, and keep it simple!

It really depends on how much you want it. Yes, it looks awesome, and if you do things that make your cpu temps shoot up (overclocking), than it may be worth it.

Hi olord, The styroform looking cloth I think you're looking at is actually just paper towls. I put them in when I launched up the computer for the first time, so in case any part of the water loop failed, it would absorb the water instead of getting all over the electronic components.

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, it's still running blazing fast for my needs, so I don't have a reason to spend more money and upgrade it. The money will be better spent on a laptop for college, yay...

That's true, but you have to take into account that a 4.3GHz Intel processor may be just as physically fast as a 5 GHz AMD processor. It has to do with how much each processor does with each cycle, so even though AMD has bigger numbers, it's better to test the actual performance of the processor than just what it says the speed is, because they're honestly very hard to compare.

Sounds good! Just remember that 2TB is 2000 GB, that's a LOT of games, and money spent on games... yet it's always better to have too much storage than too little!

It looks good for the most part to me, just be sure to confirm that you actually will use 3 TB of HD space, most people don't use more than one, so if money is important to you, I'd say think about that. Looks awesome otherwise! :)

Well, I have to say my build is working very well!!! If you're looking to save some money though, I would bend the rigid acrylic tubing instead of buying a crap load of fittings to make it all work. I built this before bending acrylic really was a viable and easy option, so it was much more expensive sadly...
