bobking87's Completed Build: EVGA Z390 Dark build

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 2 points 1 month ago

Just finishing up my dark Z390 build. Very similar build. So far this board is a beast and the 9900k's temps are better than I thought they would be. I'll get a build sheet with pics up soon. Nice build and glad I'm not the only one haha.

Start by loading default settings in bios and reinstall windows before you start buying a bunch of stuff.

This might be a long shot but make sure you have the latest version of Windows. I ended up going to windows update and manually triggered the update. For some reason it was not automatic. After the update I had no issues.

Right click on the little speaker icon in the lower right of the task bar and select each of the play back devices until you get sound. Its a long shot but ya never know.

Forum Topic "Front Panel Audio port is not working. Looking for suggestions?"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 3 months ago

Front IO panel connections are usually crap. You could try and replace it through the case manufacturer but it would be easier to use the rear IO.

Try clicking the little speaker lower right side of the task bar and switch the playback options until you select the correct one. There are probably a few options, without knowing what you have exactly just start at the top selection and work your way down until you hear something.

Forum Topic "High temps and loud fan noise?"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

You should play around with it and see what works best. Keep as it is now and record your temps at idle and under load, maybe over a few days. Switch the top fans to exhaust and do the same thing. Honestly I don't think you'll see much difference either way but you do want the setup to be the optimal one. Acewingman has a good suggestion.

Forum Topic "Plex 4K Playback Help"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

Huge difference WiFi vs Ethernet streaming 4k. It was unwatchable with WiFi. Ethernet no problem at all. My internet is 50Mbps which is Megabits per second. If you meant your internet is 40 Mbps then it should be enough. If your TV has a USB input the same 4k movie played perfectly using a passport hard drive. Doesn't fix Plex but it does play direct.

Forum Topic "Plex 4K Playback Help"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

Normally I just play standard HD when I use Plex which I love. Transcoding is a is a big fat hog. I have a 4790k running my server and it struggles with 4k. but its on wifi. So for this episode I am currently running a 50 ft ethernet cable to see if it makes a difference. Stay tuned.

Check front IO panel wires in particular the power switch wire. Try shorting the power switch pins on the motherboard with a jumper, screw driver or paper clip. If power switch on case is bad or unplugged this will start the PC. Your manual will show you the pins if in question.

Forum Topic "Where do I plug these?"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Corsair iCue software. You have to manually add your fans in the program to the channel you are using either 1 or 2. From that point you can control the speed and lights.

NZXT Cam has less to control so it's a little more straight forward.

If you need more help I can give a click by click when I get home tonight around 6pm est.

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

On your earlier post I was thinking if the cooler was working that the TIM on the CPU may have dried up. I didn't want to suggest that until we knew for sure if the pump was dead or not.

Edit: Why is CPU at 40% at idle? That might be a better question....

Forum Topic "50-60c idling CPU temp"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

What RPM does iCue show the pump running at? You can replace the cooler but would it not be better to know it is defective and not something else going on? Imagine you get the new cooler and temps stay the same.

Forum Topic "New Build Issue to put it lightly"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Okay everything I said still applies but instead of pressing the power button on the motherboard you can short the 2 pins on the motherboard for the power switch. You can use a jumper, flat head screw driver or paper clip. Just be careful to only short the power switch pins. If you're not sure what pins the manual will clearly show you. If it powers up then you'll know its the power button on the case or its wiring. If you have an ohm meter or continuity checker you could check the case switch that way too. If it doesn't power up I'd RMA the motherboard. Good luck and keep us posted.

Forum Topic "New Build Issue to put it lightly"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

I could be looking at the wrong motherboard. You may not have the power button or LED. What's the complete model number for the board if you don't mind.

Forum Topic "New Build Issue to put it lightly"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

That helped. Correct me if I'm wrong. You had the 8 pin CPU power connected to the motherboard, the 24 pin main power connected as well. You made certain they were plugged in completely with no gap between the plug and socket. You had the ram installed and it made a click with the latch closing to hold it in, CPU and CPU cooler installed without issue. You plugged in the PSU and pushed the start button that is located on the motherboard, not the case, and nothing happened. If this is accurate is it possible for you to borrow another PSU? If nothing happens with a 2nd PSU it would be safe to say it is the motherboard. If the CPU was bad you would get a CPU error code whether audible or on the LED display on the board.

Forum Topic "New Build Issue to put it lightly"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Sounds like motherboard. Check to be sure your ram is on the compatibility list and try using 1 stick of ram, check manual for which slot to use when installing only 1 stick. Since it's Corsair probably not an issue.

Power supply fan still worked when plugging power into CPU 8 pin power socket while jumped at power supply 24 pin. But plug 24pin into motherboard.

Not sure what you mean but I assume you plugged in the 8-pin CPU power.

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

When you say you "pushed the power button" are you talking about the power button on the case or the motherboard? If you was using the case power button the front IO panel wires may have come off the motherboard. Before you RMA all your ****, connect only the following to the PSU and see if it will boot. Motherboard, CPU, CPU cooler, 1 stick of ram in slot 1 or 2, try both slots or refer to the manual for witch slot to use when using only 1 stick of ram. Unplug the front IO panel wires from the motherboard and use the start button on the motherboard. If it boots to the bios connect a hard drive and install your OS. Make sure the front IO panel wires are connected correctly and finish building it. I'd recommend boot testing with each addition as you go.

Forum Topic "Where do I plug these?"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Ideally the PSU should be positioned so it is drawing cool air in from the bottom. Double check it, you should be able to screw it in either way with no issue. Won't make a lot of difference either way.

My fans draw cool air in from the front through my rad and blows it out the top and back.

Take some pics and post your build.

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

I believe the Monaro had the 5.7. along with a turbo V6. I don't know much about the Monaro other than Pontiac ef'd it up when they brought it over. Not even sure if it had the same strut issue. I don't think it did because the tires were smaller. My comment is based on my experience and what I knew back in 2008 when I bought it. And at the time of purchase all I knew was I wanted it lol.

Forum Topic "What is the worst car you ever owned? (Yet another car topic) But i dont think this has been covered"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

My worst best car was a 2006 Pontiac GTO. At first glance it was easily mistaken for a G6. When you owned one that was a huge insult and could progress to violence depending how many beers had been ingested. The 06 got the LS2 6.0 V8 which was very strong (400hp out of the box). There were a lot of performance mods for it but I didn't do much to mine as I couldn't afford it. I had to dump all my cash into suspension parts to keep tires on it. Instead of making a retro GTO Pontiac decided to steal the Holden Monaro and install an engine that was too big for the suspension. For a little added salt to the wound they decided it would be a good idea to add tires that were too big. The result was strut mount sag and tires rubbing on the struts. In some cases the tires were destroyed and accidents occurred. Pontiacs response was to ignore it all together. Not enough death to justify a recall. I loved that car, but she didn't know I existed. She just kept stealing my money and whoring around town. After 4 years of taking it in the arse I finally had to dump her for a SHO. I still miss her to this day.....

Forum Topic "PC Stuttering/Freezing"

Xx_Hemi_xX 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Lets start over : ). Unplug (Power cable and Sata cable) from the 8TB hard drive and the 10TB hard drive. Leave only the SSD plugged in. Does your PC boot to windows? If yes, does the stuttering stop? If yes, plug in the 8TB hard drive and boot to windows. Does the stuttering return? Do the same thing with the 10TB. Understand? I am trying to determine if one of the hard drives is causing the stuttering. After that we can run diagnostics on the offending hard drive if that is what is causing the stuttering.

Who is the manufacturer for the 8TB and 10TB hard drives?
