Description

After 7+ years it is finally time to upgrade my PC. I decided to go small form factor this time after realizing how much power can be crammed into a case of this size. This case is 1/5th the size of my current PC and will perform much better as well. Overall I am very happy with how this build turned out and looking forward to testing out all it can do.

More details:

Case - The Sliger SM550 is amazing and I love building in it. I used this same case (in white) for my wife's build not too long ago. If you are considering a Sliger case I would highly recommend it. Great build quality, solid durability, easy disassembly and I think it looks awesome. Very easy to build in, plenty of cable management areas/holes and everything fit perfectly.

CPU - The Ryzen 5 5600X from AMD is working out very well. Compared to my current Intel 4770K I am expecting ~50% single threaded performance increase and ~200% multi threaded performance gain. I considered going with a higher core count Ryzen 5000 CPU but prefer the 65W as opposed to the 105W TDP expected for the higher end parts. I currently have no plans to overclock, but plan to undervolt the CPU to lower the temperature and keep the system quiet. Honestly I won't notice a 5% change and prefer a quieter/cooler overall system, and hope to use this CPU for another 8+ years. [CPU stress test used Prime95 all threads]

CPU Cooler - My 2nd time using the Noctua L9a chromax black. I love this cooler, plenty small, great color compared to the usual Noctua tan/brown and obviously very quiet, overall great cooler.

Motherboard - I really like the Gigabyte B550I ITX motherboard, great layout and has all the features I need. 2.5G LAN was highly desired for file transfers between computers and NAS storage. I did have to update the BIOS using the Q-Flash functionality before plugging in the processor which didn't have a lot of documentation, though I was able to work through it after some troubleshooting.

Memory - Crucial Ballistix 3200 MHz 2x16GB CL16 sticks work great, nothing out of the ordinary. Super easy to enable the XMP profile and they just work.

GPU - The RTX 3070 Founders Edition is an amazing overall card. This thing looks awesome in my opinion and performs like a beast. I am expecting the card to get around 3-4X performance over my GTX 770. In researching this card I do know that it is somewhat discouraged to use this in a sandwich style case as the 2nd fan blows the heat right on to the power supply. I am aware of this and thankfully you can control each fan curve individually and plan to use the 1st fan primarily to blow the heat out of the back. I also plan to undervolt this GPU to lower power consumption and heat output. [GPU stress test used Heaven 4.0 Extreme]

Case Fans - Noctua NF-S12A PWM chromax black fans work very well and are nice and quiet. I would have preferred to go with the NF-A12x25 fans but as they do not come in black (yet) I went with these. These have a little less static pressure but with the case sides being open it shouldn't be as much of an issue.

Storage and PSU - Sabrent NVME 1TB m.2 SSD was chosen so that two less cables had to be run for SATA & power, good decision overall and should last a long time. The Corsair SF600 is kind of the standard for SFF builds and totally makes sense. The fan doesn't spin at low loads which is a great feature and is so small compared to the usual ATX power supplies. Included small black zip-ties were a nice touch.

Additional notes - Thank you to Microcenter for being amazing and having my Ryzen CPU in stock. Thanks to Best Buy for somehow letting me purchase a 3070 FE on release day. And lastly thank you to my wife for encouraging me to upgrade my PC, love you!

I’m really close to finish allocating parts for my NCase M1 build, and I noticed we have the same motherboard. Is there any chance you can send me a link to some sort of guide that can assist me in updating the BIOS when my time comes for building? It would be a huge help for me.

Love to seeing these type of builds in the feed. Awesome work man, enjoy it!

Hey there! When I first powered this pc on I didn't get any video output. Thus I had to use the Q Flash method which doesn't require a cpu, gpu or ram to be plugged in to the motherboard. Here is a very helpful YouTube video I found that went through the Q flash process: https://youtu.be/7cQLYROKJ_Q

If you are able to boot into the bios there is an easier method to update the bios, you will still need a formatted USB flash drive with the newest Bios from the Gigabyte website. Good luck with your build and feel free to reach out with any other questions!

Nice! Magnetic dust filters can ne added, trust me, ive done this before and a lot of dust accumulated on the fans and the GPU!

Thanks that's a great idea! Where did you get your dust filters from?

How are the temps on the 3070, I'm pretty sure one of the fans is supposed to blow air through a hole in the backplate of the gpu

jwcramer4
  • 4 years 5 months ago

So far not too bad, I did write a bit in the GPU section about the fan direction, feel free to read it. Long story short I lowered that fan speed and increased the other fan to blow air out of the back. Right now I'm getting around 75°-79° in most games.

Amazing build! Those CPU temps are pretty reasonable, that was my main concern with the the L9a cooler on a 5600X. How’s the noise levels?

jwcramer4
  • 4 years 5 months ago

Thanks! Honestly not too bad, I was a little worried with the case being so open compared to my previous build, but the Noctua fans have a very pleasant hum to them compared to my older corsair fans.

Excellent build! I'm planning on upgrading my current ITX in a very similar way to yours (same core, same motherboard, hopefully 3070/RX6800).

Do you know if it would be possible to plug a different core into the motherboard, boot Windows to update BIOS, then plug the 5600X in? I'm not too familiar with Q-Flashes yet and was wondering if it would be an alternative. Thanks!

jwcramer4
  • 4 years 5 months ago

Thank you! Yes as far as I know you should be able to use your 2700X initially with the new motherboard to boot into the BIOS. Then from there it should be pretty easy to update it before plugging in the new CPU. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions when the time comes! I like your case with the dust filers, and best of luck in securing a graphics card!

  • 4 years 5 months ago

Thanks man! I really appreciate the answer, and I'll be sure to ask again incase there's anything else. GPU securing shouldn't be a problem with this upgrade, judging by your setup (but the sheer thickness of that 5700XT will just never leave my mind)

Also, you can get the dust filters from Demcifilter . I picked up two side filters and a top filter

By securing I meant buying/finding one in stock, but I can see why you thought I meant mechanically securing :)

Nice build, man. I'm putting one together that's very similar, but inside an nr200p.

Have you seen any indication that the Corsair 600W Plat is not sufficient for your system? That's my primary source of paranoia right now.

jwcramer4
  • 4 years 5 months ago

Thanks! The 600W supply has been more than sufficient for my setup. The 5600X is rated for 65W and the 3070 for 220W and I would estimate ~50W total for the rest of the system (fans, motherboard, ssd, ram) which all together comes out to 335W. I also used the Newegg calculator which estimated 358W total so the 600W max gives plenty of breathing room.

super late but where i live 3070s are in stock

AttiJ
  • 4 years 5 months ago

i mean this is great to the point that i might copy it with a different gpu so any advice for how to build in the case and would you say there is any real merit to getting a 2.5 inch bay

jwcramer4
  • 4 years 5 months ago

Awesome sounds like a great idea! I recommend reading the installation manual on the Sliger website, basically went through everything I needed to know. As for the 2.5" Bay, I personally chose not to get it since it takes the place of a fan and I wanted more airflow. There are still 2 mounting points for 2.5" drives behind the front panel so as long as you don't expect to have 3 or more drives I wouldn't recommend it. Good luck and feel free to message me if you have any more questions!

This is an amazing build! I had a quick question: I have the same motherboard, and I was wondering if you were having any problems where the bluetooth just disappears randomly.

jwcramer4
  • 4 years 4 months ago

Actually yes I have had some major issues with the Bluetooth on this motherboard, even after installing all the drivers from the Gigabyte website... For now I am using an older Bluetooth USB dongle that works, still frustrating though!

psikon1
  • 4 years 4 months ago

Same here, I recently gave in and started using a dongle instead... It seems to be a common problem!

Hello ! How does the SF600 handles the 5600x + 3070 ? Isn't it too low ? :/ I expect approx. the same build

jwcramer4
  • 4 years 4 months ago

Hey there! Long story short, the SF600 supply has been more than sufficient. The 5600X is rated for 65W and the 3070 for 220W and I would estimate ~50W total for the rest of the system (fans, motherboard, ssd, ram) which all together comes out to 335W, much less than the 600W rating.

PSA - If you're getting the dreaded no-post/no-video bug with a RTX 3000-series GPU in this or highly similar build (and all else, like Q-Flash Plus, lights, fans, etc seems OK), then it might be the fact that the Sliger SM550 PCIe riser cable is only PCIe 3.0 (aka Gen3) rated, whereas my EVGA RTX 3070 XC3 Ultra defaults to PCIe 4.0 (aka Gen4). The fix is to swap in an older GPU and force the PCIe x16 slot down to Gen3 (default=Auto) in the BIOS, then swap back in your 3000-series GPU.

How is the noise on this case with all the open mesh?

  • 4 years 5 months ago

Not bad! I commend you on making such a compact system.

Should have gotten 3600 Mhz memory, that would be my only complaint here.

I do a decent amount of video editing as well as 3D CAD rendering from time to time, and wanted to be on the safe side. And Chrome.
